GOP Rep. Mace accused of verbally abusing police officer escort at airport
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who is running to be South Carolina's next Republican governor, has found herself embroiled in a public relations scandal that could upend her gubernatorial campaign.
The congresswoman has been accused of loudly berating and cursing out police officers and government workers during an alleged tantrum at an airport this week, according to the New York Post.
Notably, Mace has not denied the allegations against her, but instead has focused on the alleged multitude of threats against her safety while also leveling personal attacks against her chief GOP primary opponent.
Alleged verbal abuse of escort officers
The Post published an incident report filed on Thursday by the Charleston County Aviation Authority Police Department that documented the alleged verbal abuse endured by a pair of officers who'd been tasked with greeting Rep. Mace at the airport and escorting her safely to the boarding area for her flight to Washington D.C.
The first officer detailed how they'd been told to keep watch for the congresswoman to arrive at 6:30am in a "white BMW," then were told that she was running late, and eventually were informed around 7:00 that she'd already arrived and was waiting for her police escort at a special Transportation Security Administration checkpoint for crewmembers.
When the officers found Mace about a moment later, she was described as "very irate" and "talking loudly using profanity" on her phone that others could hear while they walked to her boarding area.
Damning descriptions from the officers
In a separate but more fulsome account of the alleged incident from that same officer, Rep. Mace was said to be "loudly cursing and making derogatory comments to us and about the department," including that the officers were "f--king incompetent," that "this is no way to treat a f--king US Representative," and that U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) would never receive similar treatment.
The officer noted that the congresswoman's "cursing and complaining" lasted the entire walk to the boarding area and that her "tirade" continued at the gate until she eventually boarded her flight. Afterward, the officer further noted that a TSA supervisor shared with them an account of similar "unacceptable behavior" from Mace before they arrived to provide her with an escort.
"Any other person in the airport acting and talking the way she did, our department would have been dispatch and we would have addressed the behavior," the officer concluded.
The second officer likewise provided a similar account of what transpired, in that after waiting for a "white BMW" that never arrived and subsequently learning that Mace was already waiting at a TSA checkpoint, "On our arrival, Ms. Mace started cursing and stated this is no way to treat a f--king United States Representative. She also stated Tim Scott would not be f--king treated this way and that she was tired of the police being incompetent."
Police officers and TSA agents don't deserve disrespectful treatment
In response to the report from the Post, a spokesperson for Rep. Mace's campaign didn't deny the allegations but said, "Apparently, simply arriving at an airport now makes headlines if you’re leading the race for Governor."
"We are forced to take the Congresswoman’s safety extremely seriously. After the world watched Charlie Kirk’s assassination, the threats against her have only intensified," they added. "Our security procedures are based solely on legitimate safety concerns, and any attempt to politicize this reality is both dangerous and reckless."
Mace's top opponent in the governor's race, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, released a statement in which he chastised the congresswoman for the "unacceptable" behavior of "disrespecting the men and women who keep our airports safe," and that "Law enforcement and TSA agents show up every day to protect the public, and right now they’re not even getting paid. They deserve respect and appreciation. Not profanity. Not threats. Not tantrums."
As for Mace, she has posted about the incident multiple times on her X account, albeit not to deny the accusations against her, but rather to defend her use of the special TSA checkpoint and to allege that Wilson was protecting pedophiles from prosecution and "spying on me at the airport."
