Trump urges New Yorkers to vote for Cuomo over 'communist' Mamdani to be mayor

In the New York City mayoral race, the top two contenders for voters to choose from are disgraced former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and openly avowed socialist Zohran Mamdani.

Of the two less-than-ideal choices, President Donald Trump has selected Cuomo over Mamdani as the least worst option, according to the New York Post.

The ex-governor prevailing over the upstart "communist" is so important, in Trump's view, that he even urged Republican voters in the city to abandon their party's nominee, Curtis Sliwa, and instead throw their support behind Cuomo to help ensure Mamdani's defeat.

Cuomo the better option than Mamdani

In a Truth Social post on Monday, President Trump wrote, "If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!"

"It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad," he continued. "It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win."

"I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE," Trump emphasized of Mamdani. "He was nothing as an Assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class and, as Mayor of potentially, again, the Greatest City in the World, HE HAS NO CHANCE to bring it back to its former Glory!"

"We must also remember this -- A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani," the president added. "Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!"

A "bad Democrat" is better than a "communist"

President Trump's online "endorsement" of Cuomo over Mamdani in the NYC mayoral race on Monday echoed what he had to say during a CBS News "60 Minutes" interview over the weekend about the top two candidates in Tuesday's critical election in the Big Apple.

Asked about the prospect of Mamdani becoming the mayor, Trump said, "It's going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a communist running New York, all you're doing is wasting the money you're sending there."

The Republican president acknowledged that he wasn't particularly fond of the controversial former Democratic governor, but noted that he would still be preferable to the openly declared socialist.

"I'm not a fan of Cuomo," Trump added, "but if it's going to be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I'm going to pick the bad Democrat all the time."

"He’s not endorsing me, he’s opposing Mamdani"

The New York Post reported that Cuomo, who was forced to prematurely resign from his governorship amid sexual harassment allegations, was quick to point out that President Trump didn't really endorse him as a show of support, but rather was doing what he felt was necessary to prevent Mamdani from winning.

"President Trump doesn’t support me. He opposes Mamdani, right?" Cuomo told reporters. "He believes that Mamdani is an existential threat to New York City. He believes he’s a Communist. He believes he’ll bankrupt New York."

"He’s not endorsing me, he’s opposing Mamdani," the ex-governor, who frequently tangled with Trump during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, added for clarity.
