A former Democratic official in Oregon was set to stand trial next month on multiple theft-related felony charges, but those proceedings may need to be indefinitely postponed.

Melissa Fireside, who resigned from her position as a Clackamas County commissioner earlier this year, is believed to have fled the country with her young son to escape accountability for her alleged crimes, according to Breitbart.

State and federal officials are now reportedly working together to locate and bring back the fugitive ex-lawmaker, who is accused of stealing $30,000 from an especially vulnerable and trusting victim.

Unconditional release revoked for fugitive ex-lawmaker

Last week, the Oregon Department of Justice moved to revoke the no-bail conditional release for former Commissioner Fireside, after it was informed by the child's concerned father that she had likely absconded from the country with their son.

Though the 9-year-old boy is not believed to be in any specific danger, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said, "Our top concern right now is the safety and well-being of this child."

"We are working closely with law enforcement partners here and at the federal level to locate Ms. Fireside and ensure she is held accountable under Oregon law," he added. "No one should be able to evade justice by crossing a border."

The press release noted that state investigators, aided by "federal partners," were "actively working" to locate Fireside and her son, and that once she is found, "every effort will be made" -- including the potentially difficult extradition process -- to swiftly bring her into custody and return her to the U.S.

Multiple felony charges for theft and fraud

According to local Fox affiliate KPTV, Fireside resigned from her commissioner's seat earlier this year after she was criminally charged for allegedly stealing $30,000 from her mother's boyfriend, who resides in an assisted living home.

Prosecutors allege that she convinced the victim to call his bank and reset his account information, granting her access in the process, which she used to withdraw $30,000 -- $29,000 of which was used to repay a loan from a state representative, with the remaining $1,000 deposited into her own account.

Fireside, whose trial was slated to begin on December 2, faces felony charges of First-Degree Aggravated Theft, First-degree Theft, Computer Crime, and First-Degree Forgery.

Fled to Amsterdam via Mexico

KPTV reported that the ODOJ, based on information shared by the federal Transportation Security Administration, believes that Fireside and her son used fake IDs to cross the border into Mexico, then used an Austrian passport to book a flight on Tuesday from Mexico to Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Independent journalist Andy Ngo reported on X that Fireside is a "woke Portland-area BLM activist who served on the Clackamas County Commission until she resigned in disgrace earlier this year after being charged with multiple felonies for theft and fraud has fled to Europe ahead of trial."

"Melissa Fireside crossed into Mexico with her child and then got on a flight to Amsterdam. She had been allowed to bail out without an ankle monitor," he continued. "The child’s father contacted authorities about the missing boy. They had no clue."

Ngo added that Fireside "is a Democrat who was championed by liberals for being a woke woman. She won against an incumbent conservative."
