Trump, again, calls for an end to the Senate filibuster
President Donald Trump is, again, calling for Republicans in the U.S. Senate to terminate the filibuster in order to reopen the government.
The Washington Examiner reports that Trump's latest plea to Senate Republicans was made on Saturday.
The president, though, has been making this push for over a week now. Here's one of his latest posts:

Republicans Should Terminate the Filibuster (THE DEMS WILL DO IT THE FIRST CHANCE THEY GET!), End the Shutdown, Pass lots of Great “Things,” and Win the Midterms. SO EASY TO DO - Be the Smart Party, Not the Stupid Party!

"Terminate the filibuster!"
Trump has posted several messages to social media imploring Senate Republicans to end the filibuster in order to reopen the government.
"The Democrats are winning in that they are destroying our great, miracle economy, which is exactly what they set out to do. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!" he wrote in one message.
In another, he identified 24 GOP Senators who refuse to end the filibuster. "They are all tagged here. Let them know how you feel about them allowing the democrats to keep the government closed," Trump wrote.
In yet another message, Trump wrote:
The Democrats are cracking like dogs on the Shutdown because they are deathly afraid that I am making progress with the Republicans on TERMINATING THE FILIBUSTER! Whether we make a Deal or not, THE REPUBLICANS MUST “BLOW UP” THE FILIBUSTER, AND APPROVE HUNDREDS OF LONG SOUGHT, BUT NEVER GOTTEN, POLICY WINS LIKE, AS JUST A SMALL EXAMPLE, VOTER ID (IDENTIFICATION). Only a LOSER would not agree to doing this!
And, in his most recent message, Trump stated, "Republicans Should Terminate the Filibuster (THE DEMS WILL DO IT THE FIRST CHANCE THEY GET!), End the Shutdown, Pass lots of Great “Things,” and Win the Midterms. SO EASY TO DO - Be the Smart Party, Not the Stupid Party!"
Republicans don't have the votes, says Thune
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) responded to Trump's called to terminate the Senate filibuster by stating that Republicans simply do not have the votes to do so.
The New York Post reports:
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday there isn’t enough support from Republicans to invoke the so-called “nuclear option” and kill the upper chamber’s filibuster rule. “The votes aren’t there,” Thune (R-SD) told reporters on Monday, according to Politico. When asked if he had spoken with President Trump about the issue, Thune reportedly laughed and responded: “Oh, yeah.”
Accordingly, it does not appear as though Republicans are going to be ending the filibuster any time soon.
Thune, though, is now requiring the Senate to stay in session until senators reach a deal to reopen the government.
The Hill reports:
When asked if lawmakers will stay in town until a deal is reached, Thune responded in the affirmative. The upper chamber was scheduled to be out of Washington for recess around Veterans Day, but will instead be in session.
