Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is back in the hospital after another health scare, this time involving his heart, The Sun reported.

The 56-year-old felt dizzy and slammed face-first into the ground after suffering a ventricular fibrillation flare-up, his office said.

“Senator Fetterman had this to say: ‘If you thought my face looked bad before, wait until you see it now!'” read the statement.

Fetterman hospitalized

During a walk near his home in Braddock, Pennsylvania, Fetterman felt light-headed and fell, his team said. The cause was ventricular fibrillation, which is a life-threatening heart rhythm disorder that prevents blood from pumping properly to the body. It can be caused by cardiac myopathy, which is a disease of the heart muscle that Fetterman has.

"During an early morning walk, Senator Fetterman sustained a fall near his home in Braddock," the statement said.

“Out of an abundance of caution, he was transported to a hospital in Pittsburgh.”

“He is doing well and receiving routine observation at the hospital,” Fetterman’s office continued. “He has opted to stay so doctors can fine-tune his medication regimen. Senator Fetterman is grateful for the EMTs, doctors, and nurses who are providing his care.”

Health challenges

While Fetterman received only minor injuries from the incident, it is sure to raise more questions about his overall health, which has been a recurring issue since his successful Senate bid in 2022.

After surviving a stroke during the campaign, Fetterman disclosed that he was diagnosed with cardiac myopathy and atrial fibrillation, or a-fib, which is a type of heart arrhythmia. He had a pacemaker implanted to manage his a-fib, which caused a blood clot that led to his stroke.

Fetterman's stroke also left him with an auditory processing disorder that crippled his ability to communicate clearly. His speech has improved considerably with the help of captioning technology.

Depression battle

Despite campaigning for office as a staunch leftist, Fetterman has since become known for bucking his party, a tendency that has frustrated many Democrats while winning him fans on the MAGA right. As Fetterman has seemed to move to the center, his progressive critics have increasingly questioned his fitness for office, while Republicans have come to his defense.

In his new tell-all memoir, Unfettered, the Democrat admitted to having suicidal thoughts for months after his election victory. He was treated for depression at Walter Reed Hospital shortly after starting his Senate job in 2023.

Ultimately, he found a new will to live in his role as a father.

“Whoever is in your life, they need you,” he told CBS News on Sunday. “To anyone going through this right now, stay in this game. You will get better, and my being here right now is a testament to that.”
