Autopsy report reveals cause of death for murdered superstar singer Selena Quintanilla 30 years ago
In March 1995, superstar Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla was tragically gunned down at the young age of 23 during a dispute with a former friend and business associate.
Now, 30 years later, an autopsy report has revealed that Quintanilla died due to "massive internal bleeding" caused by a single gunshot wound, according to the New York Post.
Meanwhile, as the late superstar's family and fans celebrate her life and legacy with a new documentary, the woman convicted of firing the fatal shot is continuing to serve a life sentence in a Texas prison.
Single gunshot wound caused "massive internal bleeding"
Us Weekly reported on Monday that it had obtained a copy of the report for the autopsy that was performed by the Nueces County medical examiner just hours after Quintanilla was killed on March 31, 1995.
Coroner Lloyd White ruled the death a homicide, and wrote, "It is my opinion that Selena Quintanilla Pérez, a 23-year-old woman, came to her death as a result of an exsanguinating internal and external hemorrhage, in other words, massive bleeding, due to a perforating gunshot wound of the thorax (chest)."
The deadly bullet entered Quintanilla's back, passed through her ribs and lungs, and exited her chest, causing grievous damage to the victim's subclavian artery, which resulted in the severe internal bleeding that ultimately led to her death.
Financial dispute led to fatal shooting
The Post reported that Quintanilla was murdered in March 1995 by Yolanda Saldívar, a former close friend who just weeks earlier had been fired from her dual roles as president of Selena's fan club and as the manager of the Quintanilla family's boutique store in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She had been accused of embezzlement and theft after the family had discovered that thousands of dollars were missing from both the fan club and the store, which led to an arranged meeting at a Days Inn motel room between the two women, ostensibly so Saldivar could hand over certain business records she'd retained.
Instead of turning over the documents, however, Saldivar pulled out a .38-caliber revolver she'd recently purchased in San Antonio and fired a single shot at a fleeing Quintanilla, who managed to make it to the motel's lobby before she collapsed from the mortal injury she'd sustained.
The hugely famous singer at that time was rushed to a nearby hospital by paramedics, but the wound was too grievous and she was pronounced dead that afternoon.
All of that and more about the iconic artist is included in a new documentary about Quintanilla on Netflix titled "Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy," which features "Never-before-seen footage and intimate interviews" about her short life and long-lasting legacy.
Saldivar is still in prison
As for Saldivar, according to the Post, she barricaded herself in a truck in the motel parking lot immediately after the shooting and engaged in a 10-hour standoff with the police, though she eventually surrendered to FBI negotiators.
She was ultimately charged with first-degree murder, to which she pleaded not guilty, as she claimed the fatal shot had been fired by accident, but a jury nevertheless found her guilty in October 1995 and sentenced her to serve a life sentence in prison, albeit with the possibility of parole.
Saldivar, now 64, was last up for parole in December 2024, but her request for release was denied, and she remains incarcerated at the women’s prison in Gatesville, Texas.
