Fetterman pushes back on Carville's suggestion for Dems to pack SCOTUS
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) isn't one to go by his party's talking points or actions, and over the past year or so, he's made plenty of his Democrat colleagues quite angry by doing just that.
According to the New York Post, Fetterman broke ranks with top Democrat operatives once again after he told veteran, salty Dem strategist James Carville that instead of focusing on changing the rules, Democrats should win more elections.
Fetterman was referencing the Democrats' push to reform the U.S. Supreme Court by "packing" it with extra justices -- an idea that became popular under former President Joe Biden, but never got off the ground.
Unlike most Democrats, Fetterman was never in favor of packing the Supreme Court in an effort to dilute its conservative majority.
What's going on?
It was over the weekend that the Pennsylvania Democrat pushed back against Carville and other Dems who have continued to float the idea that the party should do what it takes to pack the high court.
I strongly rejected trying to pack the Supreme Court or to change those things," Fetterman said during his "Saturday in America" interview. "When I ran for the Senate back in the ‘21, ’22, I rejected those things."
Last week, on the same show, Carville floated the suggestion that Dems should add four liberal justices to the Supreme Court.
The Post noted:
Earlier this month, Carville appeared on “Saturday in America” and voiced support for adding four liberal justices to the Supreme Court if Democrats retake the White House in 2028, saying the party should consider expanding the court to 13 justices.
"This is the lowest the Supreme Court has been rated, and if you believe, as I do, that we need faith in not just the executive or the congressional branch of government, but the Supreme Court," Carville said.
He added, "And it is not written anywhere in the Constitution that you have to have nine [justices]. That’s just a number they came up with."
Social media reacts
Users across social media had plenty of thoughts on Carville's advice and Fetterman's pushback.
