Obamas post happy family photo for Thanksgiving after repeated divorce rumors
Former first couple Barack and Michelle Obama posted a happy-looking family Thanksgiving photo in a joint Instagram post on Thursday, following months of divorce rumors based on the couple being across the country from each other and some cryptic comments by Michelle at times.
The photo showed Michelle with her arms around her daughters and Barack with his arms around Michelle as the four smiled into the camera.
The girls looked stylish and trendy, while the parents were more simply dressed in neutral colors.
“During this season of giving, let’s do what we can to give back to the communities that have given us so much. From our family to yours, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!” former President Barack Obama captioned the image.
Her absences
The rumors started at the beginning of the year when Michelle was absent from both President Donald Trump's inauguration and former President Jimmy Carter's funeral, events that are usually attended by a former president's spouse.
They continued as Michelle made some comments about feeling like she could make her own decisions in every area of her life for the first time.
But by April, Michelle was defending her choices and her marriage on Sophia Bush's podcast and on her own.
“That’s the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with like disappointing people. I mean so much so that this year people were, you know — they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing," she said.
She's not "quitting" on her man
Both Obamas have made a concerted effort to post sweet sentiments to each other on social media, and Michelle Obama said in July on her podcast, “There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I have thought about quitting on my man."
Michelle does have a point that many in society see independence in women differently from men.
A woman who looks too independent seems, in the eyes of many, not to be as committed to her husband, even if this is not the case.
Not too many couples live apart as much as the Obamas seem to, but not too many are multi-millionaires running different businesses and scheduled the way they do, either.
She has been successful in her own right as an author and speaker. She could probably be president if she were to run, but she says that's never going to happen; a lot could change between now and 2028.
