Jack Smith teams up with anti-Trump lawyers for new firm

Brace yourselves, patriots—Jack Smith, the former Special Counsel who led the Department of Justice’s relentless pursuit of Donald Trump, is staging a comeback.

Smith has aligned himself with a trio of legal warriors—Tim Heaphy, David Harbach, and Thomas Windom—to establish a new law firm that promises what they call “zealous advocacy” for clients.

Let’s break down who these folks are. Smith, Harbach, and Windom were the driving force behind indictments accusing Trump of trying to reverse the 2020 election outcome and improperly handling classified documents.

Legal team with a contentious history

Unfortunately for them, their legal efforts didn’t stick. Tim Heaphy, a former U.S. Attorney from the Obama years, led the House probe into the January 6, 2021, Capitol incident and Trump’s post-election actions.

Smith hasn’t dodged controversy himself. Reports of his operation, codenamed “Arctic Frost,” revealed aggressive moves like taking Trump’s personal phone and secretly subpoenaing records of senators and congressmen, often with approval from judges appointed by Democratic presidents.

Such tactics have drawn sharp criticism. The House Judiciary Committee has called Smith to testify in a closed-door session on Dec. 17 to account for his actions.

Court rulings challenge Smith’s legitimacy

Adding insult to injury, a federal judge declared that Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of Smith as Special Counsel violated constitutional standards. That’s a serious blow to his credibility.

Despite failing to secure convictions against Trump, the political fallout from Smith’s pursuits lingers. Trump’s sweeping win in all seven swing states against Vice President Kamala Harris shows the public may have had the last word.

Now, Smith and his allies are shifting gears to launch this new law firm. Tim Heaphy described their focus as centered on “integrity, commitment, and zealous advocacy” for both public and private clients.

Firm’s mission raises eyebrows

Let’s chew on that phrase for a moment. “Zealous advocacy” might sound high-minded, but with this crew’s track record of targeting Trump, it could just be code for doubling down on political battles.

Observers can’t help but question the firm’s true intentions. Will it serve a wide range of clients, or simply become a launchpad for progressive agendas wrapped in legal jargon?

For many conservatives, this feels like a regrouping of the same anti-Trump brigade. The perception of a grudge in a briefcase is hard to shake given their history.

Conservatives remain wary of agenda

That said, these are experienced legal minds with a knack for complex cases. If they channel that expertise beyond political vendettas, they might offer real value to clients.

Still, caution is warranted among those on the right. A firm born from failed prosecutions of Trump could easily pivot to championing controversial policies under the banner of integrity.

The road ahead for this law firm will be one to watch. Will it rise above past biases, or remain a thorn in the side of conservative values? Time will tell.
