Governor Walz mobilizes National Guard after ICE incident
Minnesota is in the eye of a storm after a tragic shooting involving a federal agent in Minneapolis.
Yesterday morning, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a woman in a Minneapolis street, sparking immediate action from Gov. Tim Walz, who issued a warning order to ready the Minnesota National Guard, activated the State Emergency Operation Center, and deployed the State Patrol’s Mobile Response Team.
Gov. Walz Responds with Swift Action
Let’s rewind to the start: the shooting occurred when masked ICE agents approached a vehicle, and shots were fired after the car reportedly sped up.
The State Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now digging into the details, and no stone should be left unturned in holding federal agents accountable for their actions.
Gov. Walz didn’t waste time, issuing a warning order to prepare the Minnesota National Guard, a force of 13,000 soldiers and airmen, for possible deployment.
National Guard Prepares for Potential Deployment
As Joint Staff Director Simon Schaefer noted, “The state’s guard consists of 13,000 soldiers and airmen, and the guard is always prepared to respond and support state agencies and the citizens of Minnesota.”
That’s a reassuring statement, but let’s be real—while the Guard is gearing up with equipment checks and notifications to service members, many conservatives might wonder why federal overreach necessitated this in the first place.
Couldn’t a better dialogue between state and federal authorities prevent such drastic measures?
Tensions Rise Over Federal Immigration Policies
Gov. Walz also activated the State Emergency Operation Center, signaling the gravity of this crisis, while the State Patrol’s Mobile Response Team was called into action.
Then there’s Walz’s sharp rhetoric, as he declared, “Donald Trump and his administration may not care much about Minnesota — that’s been pretty evident — but we love this state.”
While his passion for Minnesota is clear, let’s not pretend this is just about state pride—it’s a direct jab at federal immigration enforcement, and conservatives might argue that law and order, not political grandstanding, should take precedence.
It's also the perfect attempt to distract from a huge scandal involving $9 billion or more in fraudulent payments to day cares and other services around the state.
Walz Calls for Unity Against Federal Actions
Walz went further, urging national solidarity with, “To Americans who are watching this, if you’re in Portland or you’re in LA, or you’re in Chicago, or you’re wherever they’re coming next, stand with us.”
That’s a bold call to action, but from a right-of-center view, it risks inflaming tensions when what’s needed is calm, clear-headed policy debate over immigration enforcement—not a rallying cry that could deepen divisions.
