DANIEL VAUGHAN: Are Democrats Rigging The Convention For Biden? Looks That Way
While the Republican convention is a show of force, unity, and American values in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, the Democratic Party is imploding again. That part, by itself, isn't noteworthy these days. What is remarkable is that Democrats are trying to change the rules to save Joe Biden's place on the ticket and lying in the process.
According to the White House, Biden's plan is to "run out the clock" on his Democratic opposition. The plan is twofold. First, Biden's campaign is shifting the time when the convention confirms him. Instead of waiting until the actual Democratic convention, Biden's campaign is acerbating the clock: they want him confirmed next week.
The New York Times reports that the Biden campaign is pushing the Democratic National Committee to conduct a virtual video call this Friday. From there, "All of the more than 4,000 delegates are expected to begin casting their ballots as soon as Monday, a process that is likely to take about a week. After that, the committee is expected to quickly hold the roll call, a tradition that typically occurs on the convention floor but is being held virtually this year."
Biden Democrats claim this is to bring the party in line with Ohio state law, which requires an earlier nomination time to make it on the ballot. However, Ohio passed a law to move the designation period back, allowing Democrats to hold their convention and have Biden on the ballot. It was a measure passed by Republicans.
Democratic Representative Jared Huffman (CA) blasted the plan. "Ohio is a fig leaf ... There is simply no risk." Other Democrats who view Biden as a risk hold the same view. And they'd be right - the last-second move by Democratic Leadership to shift the vote is not about Ohio. There was already a plan in place to handle that issue.
The goal of Democratic leadership is to cut off Biden's detractors within the party and prevent them from causing a scene at the Democratic Convention in August. Donna Brazile is pushing the idea, too.
In short, the party that claims to represent democracy is looking to thwart democracy in any way possible. This has been a regular point for the Biden campaign. They started in the primary cycle by shifting the order of the primaries to benefit Biden. Then, there was the pressure campaign against anyone else running against Biden. That process is getting capped off by ripping the rug out from under Democrats and installing Biden without normal convention rules.
Democrats are willing to do whatever it takes to install Joe Biden. As the Times also reported, the Biden White House is shrinking. Biden is cutting out everyone but his family and most loyal members. It's an insular place where only those who support Biden are allowed in the inner circle, and all debate on the party's future is over.
Some Democratic Members of the House have written a letter opposing this move. The letter calls accelerating the Democratic nomination process by a month a "purely political maneuver" and demands that Democrats nominate Biden at the convention like they always have.
In truth, however, Biden and his staff fear the Democratic Convention. There have already been calls from activists to turn the convention into a repeat of the disaster that was the 1968 Democratic Convention. And with the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, the comparisons with 1968 are growing.
What Biden fears even more is the clock. The longer the convention looms, the more chances Democrats have to remove Biden. Politico reports that Nancy Pelosi and other senior Democrats are fielding calls from Democrats across the country on how to deal with Biden.
Politico reported that one Democratic lawmaker called Pelosi, "said Pelosi, asked detailed questions about congressional district-level polling and was "very receptive" to concerns that Biden couldn't win in November. The member ended the phone call with the distinct impression that Pelosi believed Biden should exit the presidential race."
Running out the clock means heading Democrats off at the pass and preventing any more surges against Biden. And right now, that means lying about what the law says, lying about what Democrats are doing, and throwing up dirt at anyone who questions the process.
Democratic leadership can claim this entire process is about stopping Donald Trump, but the reality is that the bar is much lower. The truth is that Democrats are a weak, divided party and that division centers around whether Joe Biden will even make it to Election Day. It's the Joe Biden vanity project, trying to carry him across the line.
Could that work? Sure. But no one believes Biden can do it. And if you don't believe me on that, just read any press clippings about Joe Biden from Democrats in the last month.
