DANIEL VAUGHAN: Biden, Democrats Do Not Care That Laken Riley Was Murdered

The late great Norm MacDonald had an incredible joke when he chatted with Jerry Seinfeld. Norm starts by asking Jerry if he thinks Cosby's legacy will be hurt - this is after all the various rape trials. Jerry answers, "Yeah." Norm replies, "You do, huh? You know, there was a comedian named Patton Oswald who told me I think the worst part of the Cosby thing was the hypocrisy. And I disagreed." Jerry looks at him, confused, "You disagree with that?" Norm said, "Yeah... I thought the worst part was the raping."

That wry observation by Norm was hard to forget watching the fallout from Biden's State Of The Union speech. Biden is in hot water because he used the term "illegals" when referring to the murderer of Laken Riley, the young Georgia nursing student killed by José Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old migrant from Venezuela.

That specific moment in Biden's speech came when he referenced the event after Republicans goaded him into it. He messed her name up, saying "Lincoln Riley," and dismissed the murder overall by saying, "Laken Riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. That's right. But how many thousands of people being killed by legals? To her parents, I say, my heart goes out to you, having lost children myself. I understand."

In everything surrounding this story, the left is mad at one thing: Biden's use of the word "illegal." Never mind that José Antonio Ibarra illegally crossed the border in September 2022, was "part of the deadly Tren de Aragua gang on internal Department of Homeland Security documents," and should have been deported immediately.

We're also supposed to ignore the fact that, as of January 2024, Biden had taken 535 executive actions related to border security in three years, making it easier for migrants, illegals, or undocumented immigrants to cross the border. That's more actions than Trump took in four years. Ibarra was in the United States as a direct cause of Biden's immigration policy.

Never mind all those things: Democrats want you to believe the worst thing about this entire story is the fact that Biden used the word illegal. Biden got the cue from his leftist wing and gave an interview apologizing for using the term.

Meanwhile, the rest of America is looking at this, starting to believe they're taking crazy pills. Because the worst part of all this is that Laken Riley was needlessly murdered by a person who was never supposed to be in that spot. Riley's murder wasn't a random happenstance - it was a choice.

The worst part is the murder, not the words. Policing words is a petty attempt to play semantics while real people pay the price for some of the worst border policies in a generation. Biden should be apologizing to Riley's parents for making the country less secure, but instead, he spent his speech screaming at Republicans, demanding to know "how many people are murdered by illegals."

Biden's defense is like Hillary Clinton's "what difference does it make" line when questioned about the dead soldiers in Benghazi. Biden and Democrats demand the same here: what difference does it matter to them, or anyone, that Americans are being murdered by illegals, migrants, or undocumented immigrants?

And just like Clinton, the reason it matters is because Americans are dead in a situation that they shouldn't be. Why can't Democrats manage to fake some concern about this situation?

When Trump took office, we got countless images of them suddenly caring about family separation and people in cages -- things the Obama administration set up -- and they suddenly lost their voice on that when Biden took office. On a daily basis, you can find people in a humanitarian crisis at the border: women are raped, children kidnapped, and worse.

And the reason these things happen is due to U.S. policy at the southern border. If the only thing you care about are the words used, you care about none of the people involved: the migrants, the victims, or the families of those impacted. That's the actual conclusion to all of this: people are losing their lives and being irrevocably harmed by a broken system, and the response from Democrats is a collective shoulder shrug.

The problem is murder. The problem is assault and other crimes. We need to focus on fixing those issues. Because no matter what term Democrats want to use this week, they've shown no interest in the real problems. Policing words won't bring Laken Riley back or help anyone harmed by Biden's immigration policies.

It's time for perspective on the left.
