DANIEL VAUGHAN: Biden Must Act Now To Protect Jewish Lives In American Cities

The anti-Israel protestors at Columbia University and other institutions of higher learning are not confined to colleges. Antisemitism is growing and spreading. And while you can find this in Europe, most concerningly, this is happening in America, a place long friendly to the Jewish people.

A primary goal of the United States is to provide a safe haven for Jews and other persecuted minorities. Instead, we're seeing increased attacks and harassment against Jews. It's happening every, but the critical problem is that it's occurring in the city with the largest Jewish population on earth outside Israel: New York City.

In a lengthy investigation, The Wall Street Journal found, "There have been 103 complaints of hate crimes targeting Jews so far in 2024 and 10 against Muslims, according to the most recent citywide New York Police Department data. That is an increase from 68 and two, respectively, over the same period in 2023. In the precincts covering the Upper West Side, there were 25 reported bias incidents against Jews between Oct. 7, 2023, and the start of April, according to the NYPD."

Beyond those numbers, synagogues are hiring security, and Jews are concerned about walking outside and wearing clothing or jewelry that identifies them as Jews. Some of them have made arrangements with the NYPD for security help. One person interviewed called New York a second Israel for many people, but now he had "stopped speaking Hebrew on the street."

At Yale University, a Jewish student was stabbed in the eye by an anti-Israel activist. At CUNY's City College of New York, a journalist was attacked for carrying an American flag by the same kinds of activists. Israeli-born Professor Shai Davidai's credentials at Columbia University were deactivated, and he is threatening to sue the institution.

After Columbia moved to hybrid classes, a former law professor at the school suggested they were trying to avoid class action lawsuits. The move is unsurprising as it has become increasingly clear these universities either have no spine to stand against pure evil or tacitly agree with the discrimination against Jews.

We know none of this will stop at universities because the activists themselves claim this. The Democratic National Convention in August is already in the crosshairs of these radical leftists. One Chicago activist said, "Have you heard that the Democratic National Convention is coming to Chicago?...Are we going to let 'em come here without a protest? This is Chicago, goddamn it—we've got to give them a 1968 kind of welcome."

1968 is not just any year. That was the convention year that Lyndon Baines Johnson stepped down and allowed himself to be replaced as the nominee. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were both assassinated, riots flooded the country, tens of thousands of police officers worked 12-hour shifts in Chicago to keep the peace, and hundreds were arrested in the violence that wrecked the city.

The agitators and anti-Israel types see that as a battle plan to emulate, not a national disgrace. The national response was to give Nixon a landslide. If Joe Biden had a shred of common sense in his brain, he'd send the National Guard to Chicago, Illinois, right now, in April, to secure that city against those who want to display their hatred for Jews, Israel, and America.

They call Joe Biden "Genocide Joe," meanwhile, they call for the extermination of the Israeli state, Jews, and anyone who opposes them. We are witnesses to their depravity. There are chants of "Death to Israel" and "Death to America." There's no room for contrasting visions for these violent agitators. They see everyone not with them as an enemy.

That is why Jews in New York City, the place that was once a second Israel with a massive Jewish population, is now a threatening place to live. Safe havens are no longer safe nor havens.

To repeat, we're not talking about some Middle Eastern country, Russia, China, or random violent displays in Europe. This is the United States of America, where this is happening on the streets of a country that prides itself on freedom for all. It's on American campuses and streets that people are carrying signs calling for the "final solution," a specific throwback to the utterly depraved Nazi slogan for butchering Jews.

Collectively, as a society, these vile racists must be curbed. We need police and the National Guard to flood campuses and cities to clear the streets. Then, Democrats need to focus hard on securing their convention now. The time for half-measures is over - this is a moment for action.

American Jews are actively endangered, and I mean that in a very literal sense. People are harassing Jews and calling for their extermination. We cannot allow that to stand on American soil. If Biden and Democrats do not act, particularly in these enclaves that they control politically, the ramifications could get ugly. Act now.
