DANIEL VAUGHAN: Is Biden Trying To Start A War In Iran?

We're in the final weeks of the Biden administration, and aside from pardoning everyone or gutting justice, he's now talking about taking major military action against Iran. If taken, this action would force Trump into hard military decisions on day one of his administration, as Biden would launch a strike and head out the door.

Axios reports that Joe Biden has discussed and is considering a strike against Iran's nuclear sites if Tehran pushes towards a bomb before January 20, 2025. The irony of this discussion is that in October, Biden warned Israel against taking any such strikes.

Additionally, this move by Biden would cut against his friendliness up until now. In the immediate aftermath of the election, Biden renewed sanctions waivers for Iran to the tune of $10 billion. "Under the conditions of the waiver, Iran will receive nearly $10 billion being held in escrow accounts in Iraq that US officials claim may only be used for humanitarian trade."

Iran desperately needs this aid because it faces an energy crisis at home. Its citizens are literally facing life in the dark and cold in the winter. Instead of turning up the pressure on Iran, Biden has lessened it wherever possible—until now, in the last days of his presidency.

Axios reports, "A U.S. official with knowledge of the issue said the White House meeting was not prompted by new intelligence or intended to end in a yes or no decision from Biden. Instead, it was part of a discussion on "prudent scenario planning" of how the U.S. should respond if Iran were to take steps like enriching Uranium to 90% purity before January 20."

The notable shift from the fall, when Biden said nuclear strikes were not an option, to now is that Donald Trump is headed to the White House. Iran knows who and what Trump will do. Where Biden refused to put pressure on the regime, Trump will act. The Biden White House is afraid the Iranians will become nuclear-armed in an attempt to gain leverage over Trump.

The Biden White House is trying to suggest that Iran's rush is the fault of Trump and Israel's strikes in the past year. But as Axios notes, "Iran's nuclear program has advanced dramatically during Biden's time in office, bringing Iran to the status of a de-facto 'nuclear threshold state.'"

Iran's push for a nuclear bomb isn't new. Israel hit sites in Iran that were "former" nuclear testing and missile sites. Iran claims these are no longer in use, but few people believe they were telling the truth. And because everything official said these weren't nuclear sites, Biden couldn't yell at Israel like he had been doing.

Additionally, back in July, the Biden administration admitted Iran was on this path. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security adviser Jake Sullivan indicated that "Iran is talking more about getting a nuclear bomb and has made strides in developing a key aspect of a weapon since about April, when Israel and its allies overpowered a barrage of Iranian airstrikes targeting Israel."

In short, nothing related to Iran's push for a bomb is new. We've known this for years, and Israel has warned about it for decades. Both the Obama and Biden administrations helped Iran in its push towards becoming a nuclear power, engaging in laxidaiscal policies that aided the terrorist regime.

But apparently, Biden now believes the Iranian threat is so potentially close at hand that the United States should strike the country itself. Biden has gone from blasting Israel for such a thing to leaking that his administration might do the same in the next few days and weeks.

I have no doubt that the Iranians feel the heat from Donald Trump's election. But they've pushed for a bomb the entire time Biden has been in office and beyond that. Trump put pressure on them, and before that, George W. Bush. We're at this point because the Obama and Biden administrations played footies with the Iranians, and now the world is a less safe place.

Striking Iran makes a lot of sense, but not from an administration that's gotten everything wrong related to Iran. Biden's deciding to launch major strikes on Iran and then just walk off the world stage is irresponsible in the extreme. Biden entered office proclaiming the "adults were back in charge."

Like most Americans, we're all still waiting to see adults show up in any way. Our enemies don't fear us; Iran is closer to a bomb than ever, and Joe Biden is throwing around strikes on another country like it's some profound strategy shift.

We need Biden's term to end quickly so these kinds of surprises can end. We also need Biden out to prevent other enemies of the country from getting aid.
