DANIEL VAUGHAN: Who Was Running Robert Mueller's Probes?
One of the major questions in Washington D.C., has been who was running the Biden White House during those times; it's clear he wasn't in control of things. We won't stop there. Robert Mueller, former head of the F.B.I. and leader of the Russian collusion probe into Trump, has had a Parkinson's disease diagnosis since 2021.
We must now ask: Was Robert Mueller running that investigation, or was he a figurehead used by others? This is a critical question because Congress has questions for Mueller.
In a statement to The New York Times, Mueller's family said: "Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the summer of 2021 ... He retired from the practice of law at the end of that year. He taught at his law school alma mater during the fall of both 2021 and 2022, and he retired at the end of 2022. His family asks that his privacy be respected."
His family had to give the statement. The Times notes, "The statement from the family came after the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said it would subpoena him to testify on Tuesday. The committee had sought to question Mr. Mueller, 81, about the F.B.I.'s handling of the Epstein investigation when he served as its director from 2001 to 2013."
That's not all, however. The Times also says, "Questions arose about Mr. Mueller's health after he delivered a halting performance before Congress in 2019 about his report on ties between Mr. Trump's campaign and Russia."
The diagnosis was confirmed in 2021. There are questions about it dating back at least to 2019, and possibly earlier. There are whispers that Mueller was only a figurehead during the infamous investigation. As he was a special counsel during the Trump administration, Trump had no oversight over him.
The Epstein investigation questions are fair as well. But everything pales in comparison to whether he was functioning as the head of the Russian collusion investigation. The special counsel laws in this country aren't meant to do that - the person in charge is supposed to be the person in charge.
What makes this worse is that we know Democrats were involved in that first term. Declassified information tells us, "since-fired FBI Director Comey approved leaking classified information despite his denials to the contrary, including using his lieutenants and friends to leak to the media."
Things were not running correctly with Comey, and with Mueller in this state, it seems that his special counsel tenure was likely worse than Biden's in the White House. That leaves the question: what happened during that time? Who was running the show?
This is now the third major agency in Washington D.C. that Democrats assured everyone was sacrosanct, that was run by someone medically challenged. Joe Biden fits this bill, as does Biden's Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who vanished with no one noticing for days and weeks at a shot. And now we have Robert Mueller, who was a #Resistance folk hero in the first Trump term.
If Mueller wasn't the one running the show, then you have to look at the rogues' gallery of characters on Mueller's team at one time or another. That group of people is a list of individuals who have made MSNBC appearances a regular part of their lives. These are not apolitical, honest brokers of the truth.
The disturbing takeaway from examining the last five years is that we don't know who was really running the show. And that's true from the White House to the special counsel investigations. Robert Mueller had a distinguished career as head of the F.B.I. - he wasn't perfect, because none of us are - but we now have hard questions about the end of that career.
Was he just getting rolled out for statements? Did he really run the show as special counsel? To what extent were his symptoms being covered by government officials during this time?
The questions are legion, and grow from there. The pitch of everyone involved is that they aim to restore trust in the government. Biden's claim that the adults were back. Mueller's investigation ostensibly brought transparency. Instead, we're left with worse questions than we entered these situations with.
Instead of one Biden health cover-up scandal, there are multiple. It's not lost on me that this is happening against a backdrop where liberals are trying to wish-cast ill-health on Trump, prompting journalists to report that Trump is fine and golfing during a holiday weekend.
At this stage, you should view these types of reports as pure projections. In turn, it's left to Republicans to figure out the bizarre and unsettling question of: who has been running the federal government?
My condolences and prayers to the families of Robert Mueller and Joe Biden for dealing with these illnesses. I wish them on no one. But we're in this situation because of them. There's no way around those questions now.
