Trump Border czar pick Tom Homan cries when recalling migrant child's death
President-elect Donald Trump's pick for border czar Tom Homan broke down in tears during an interview with TV host Dr. Phil that will air tonight and tomorrow, recalling the death from heat exposure of an illegal immigrant child that he discovered in a trailer.
"I'm standing in the back of a trailer with 19 dead people at my feet who baked to death," Homan, a former Immigration and Customs Enforcement official, recalled. "All the ones who died were in their underwear trying to get some relief from the heat."
"When I went to that crime scene and I keyed in on a five-year-old little boy wearing batman underwear - the same underwear my son had, my five-year-old son," Homan said with tears in his eyes.
Homan said that the experience convinced him that something needed to be done to close the border.
"No one should suffer like that"
"You think about what that little boy went through, how he suffered," he said. "No one should suffer like that, and it broke me because I know it can be fixed. I know it can be prevented."
The answer, Homan said, is securing the border and preventing people from even trying to cross it.
"When you have a secure border and people aren't making that journey, they're not dying," he said.
The incident described by Homan was not the largest number of people who died in the same way; 53 people died from the heat in a locked 18-wheeler in 2022 in San Antonio.
The Mexicans and Central Americans tried to claw their way out. The dead included six children and a pregnant woman.
"Changed me forever"
'That incident back in the tractor trailer, that changed me forever,' Homan said, adding that he got counseling after seeing the crime scene.
Trump will be directing him to lead the "largest" deportation of illegal immigrants in U.S. history beginning January 20 when he takes office.
"I'm a tough guy but I had to get help," he said. "When you deal with so much tragedy, it wears on you."
"People want to know why I'm so emotional about this and why I'm so hardcore, because I'm sick and tired of burying children and having women being raped," he concluded.
Homan is flipping the script on what true compassion is when it comes to the border. Letting everyone in causes many problems and is not really as kind and compassionate as liberals want to think.
