Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently worked out an agreement with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to share tax information connected with illegal immigrants.

That fact didn't sit well with Acting Internal Revenue Service (IRS) commissioner Melanie Krause, who responded by giving the White House her resignation.

Sources say Krause disagreed with final draft of agreement

CNN cited a source as saying that although Krause had been involved with drafting the agreement, she disagreed with its final version.

The source went on to explain that there were other factors surrounding Krause's departure, including a sense of dissatisfaction over the IRS's new direction.

"Melanie Krause has been leading the IRS through a time of extraordinary change," a Treasury Department spokesperson was quoted as saying in a statement on Tuesday.

"As we focus on IT modernization and re-organize the agency to better serve the taxpayer, we are also in the midst of breaking down data silos that for too long have stood in the way of identifying waste, fraud, and abuse and bringing criminals to justice," the statement continued.

Agreement relates to aliens who flout removal orders

"We believe these goals are critical to a more efficient government and safer country. We wish Melanie well on her next endeavor," the spokesperson went on to add.

Fox News reported that the agreement will allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to request information on criminal illegal immigrants who have refused to leave the country within 90 days of a final removal order.

Specifically, it will permit ICE to submit the name of an illegal immigrant to the IRS, which could then cross-check tax records to find his or her current address.

An unnamed senior Treasury Department official indicated that safeguards will be in place to ensure that sensitive taxpayer information is protected.

Treasury spokesperson says agreement establishes "a clear and secure process"

"The Internal Revenue Service and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement have entered into a memorandum of understanding [MOU] to establish a clear and secure process to support law enforcement’s efforts to combat illegal immigration," a Treasury Department spokesperson told Fox News

"The bases for this MOU are founded in longstanding authorities granted by Congress, which serve to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans while streamlining the ability to pursue criminals," the spokesperson stressed.

The spokesperson further declared, "After four years of Joe Biden flooding the nation with illegal aliens, President Trump’s highest priority is to ensure the safety of the American people."
