Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) spent years as a House lawmaker going after President Donald Trump in one form or another, and continued to do the same when he became a senator.

However, the tables have turned. Mr. Schiff is apparently in a boatload of trouble, according to the Daily Mail, as he is now under investigation for mortgage fraud, with charges possibly following.

The bombshell news came in the wake of President Trump publicly calling out Mr. Schiff in several social media posts. In one of the posts, he slammed Schiff as a "scam artist."

The California Democrat is under investigation and will possibly soon be charged for allegedly misrepresenting which of his homes he claimed as his primary residence.

What's happening?

Fox News host Laura Ingraham learned from a Trump administration official that Schiff could soon be charged by the US Attorney's office in Maryland for mortgage fraud -- a potentially career-devastating charge if he's found guilty.

Trump's Justice Department received a criminal referral regarding the alleged fraud last month.

The Daily Mail noted:

The Department of Justice last month received a criminal referral from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) allegeding Schiff falsified bank documents and property records to secure better loan terms.

The report added:

In a 2011 affidavit signed by Schiff, he declared a home in Montgomery County, Maryland, as his primary residence, but as recent as 2023, a condominium in Burbank, California, is also listed as his primary residence.

The mortgage rate for the home was set based on the claim that it was the senator's primary residence.

"Multiple instances" of alleged fraud

FHFA Director William Pulte released a statement on the unfolding situation.

"Based on media reports, Mr. Adam B. Schiff has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, impacting payments from 2003-2019 for a Potomac, Maryland-based property," he said.

Pulte added, "As regulator of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks, we take very seriously allegations of mortgage fraud or other criminal activity."

Only time will tell if Schiff is formally charged, and if so, what the consequences will be if found guilty.
