AG Bondi threatens to defund sanctuary cities for failing to comply with deportation orders

Many said President Donald Trump hired a team of "Avengers" to lead his Cabinet and his administration. That seems to definitely be the case, based on what's happened in the past week alone.

According to the New York Post, another massive move in Trump's orbit came this week via newly appointed U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who launched a shock and awe campaign against Democrats who run so-called "sanctuary cities."

Bondi, within 24 hours of being confined by the U.S. Senate, issued a directive to sanctuary city leaders notifying them that they'll be defunded permanently on a federal level if they fail to comply with Trump's deportation policies.

The consequences of such actions could be monumental, especially for major cities like New York and Los Angeles.

What's happening?

Shortly after being sworn in as AG by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Bondi dropped the mother of all bombshell announcements by pausing federal funds to sanctuary cities.

"[T]he Department of Justice will ensure that, consistent with law, ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ do not receive access to Federal funds from the Department," she said in her Day One memo.

Holding nothing back, Bondi, in her memo, went on to explain her actions.

"Consistent with applicable statutes, regulations, court orders, and terms, the Department of Justice shall pause the distribution of all funds until a review has been completed, terminate any agreements that are in violation of law or are the source of waste, fraud, or abuse, and initiate clawback or recoupment procedures, where appropriate," the memo read.

Several large U.S. cities could be affected by Bondi's directive, including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Social media reacts

Trump's supporters across social media were thrilled with the move -- a move that never would have happened had Kamala Harris won the 2024 election.

"Pam NO FEAR Bondi. Today is amazing!" one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Fantastic. Way to go. Finally some common sense!"

Sanctuary city leaders might talk tough on social media, but it's always about the money, and it'll be interesting to see how fast they fall in line.
