Al Sharpton spearheads a 'buy-in' campaign at Harlem Costco in pursuit of DEI policy support
The Rev. Al Sharpton led a "buy in" at the Harlem Costco to support the company's rejection of a bid that challenged their corporate DEI policies.
MSNBC's presenter disclosed that he and 100 members of his National Action Network visited the store on Sunday, as The Daily Mail reported.
Costco shareholders rejected an anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) proposal on Friday, which was introduced by the activist shareholder group National Center for Public Policy Research.
A report on the hazards associated with the wholesale grocery chain's DEI policies would have been required under the measure.
From Sharpton
"Leading a buy-in with 100+ @NationalAction members at the @Costco location in Harlem, NYC to show support for the company’s strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)," Rev. Sharpton said in a post on X.
Sharpton told the 100 people who participated in the "buy in" that he had rewarded Costco for staying true to its DEI promises by purchasing $25 gift certificates for them to use in-store.
"We’re going shopping at Costco because they’ve stood with us. People that stand with us, we will stand with them," Sharpton said.
MLK Day Speech
During a Martin Luther King Day speech at the Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, D.C., Sharpton advocated for a boycott of companies that abandon their DEI policies.
"Why do we have DEI? We have DEI because you denied us diversity, you denied us equity, you denied us inclusion. DEI was a remedy to the racial institutionalized bigotry practice in academia and in these corporations. Now, if you want to put us back in the back of the bus, we going to do the Dr. King-Rosa Parks on you," Sharpton said.
Sharpton's action follows the termination of DEI initiatives by the federal government by President Trump's executive orders.
DOGE has reported that the order has already led to the cancellation of over $400 million in federal expenditures on DEI initiatives and the placement of nearly 400 federal bureaucrats on leave.
Harsh Words for Trump
On Sunday, the head of the National Action Network condemned Trump's actions as an "outright affront" to the Black community and other minority groups while standing outside Costco.
Despite the fact that Costco is remaining steadfast in its commitment to its DEI policies, quite a few other corporations have opted to drop the controversial programs in response to a widespread backlash.
In recent months, numerous organizations, including McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Harley-Davidson, and Facebook, have discontinued their diversity and inclusion initiatives.
During an interview at the Davos World Economic Forum, Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan, reiterated the bank's commitment to diversity and inclusion (DEI) policies.
The fight with Costco is far from over, according to National Center for Public Policy Research analyst Ethan Peck, who told Fox News Digital that there's a "decent chance" the wholesaler will abandon its DEI policies before the year ends.
