America turning more conservative, new poll reveals

Americans are becoming more conservative and less liberal, according to the findings of a new Gallup poll.

The Gallup Values and Beliefs Survey noted that conservative views topped liberals on some of the nation's most important topics.

The findings

“For most of the past eight years, Americans were about as likely to say they were liberal as conservative on social issues. This year, there is a more obvious conservative advantage,” said the nation’s biggest pollster on Thursday.

“The shift is mostly due to increasing social conservatism among Republicans, at a time when social issues such as transgender rights, abortion and other hot-button concerns are prominent in the national public debate,” explained Gallup of the conservative backlash.

The numbers

"40% say they have conservative views. Meanwhile, 31% say they have moderate views with just 26% being liberal," the survey found.

"Since 2021, there have been double-digit increases in conservative social ideology among middle-aged adults — those between the ages of 30 and 64," it added.

The findings come as GOP presidential candidates focus on conservative values as American values.

"If you are able-bodied, you work. If you take out a loan, you pay it back. If you commit a violent crime, you go to jail. If you're a man, you should play sports against men," Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) tweeted.

"These aren’t just conservative values, they are American values," he added.

The survey's results also come as Democrats seek to reboot Biden's campaign strategy after a term filled with multiple crises, rampant inflation and record gas prices.

The contrast could point toward a win for the GOP next year but only if America's voters turn out in large number to vote their values.
