AOC rumors swirl after she slams Schumer for siding with Republicans
America's Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, recently made a decision that drew praise from Donald Trump. You can guess how that went over with his fellow liberals.
The recent crossing of the aisle by Schumer infuriated many Democrats in this country, leading to criticism from the radical left's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. Many liberals across the country are even calling for AOC to primary Chuck Schumer in the next election.
One liberal recently told CNN that Democrats are "'so mad' that they are 'ready to write checks for AOC for Senate,'" the New York Post reports.
Schumer's decision: avoid a government shutdown
Chuck Schumer had initially said that he wasn't going to support what Republicans were trying to do with their stopgap spending bill, but when it came time to cast his vote, surprised many people by actually siding with the GOP.
President Donald Trump even praised Schumer's decision, calling it "gutsy" and "courageous."
House Democrats, led by Hakeem Jeffries, did not feel the same way. Many of them publicly disparaged the idea of keeping the government running, which they probably wouldn't have done if they knew they didn't have the votes. Now they look like losers AND like they don't want America's government to keep running.
Challenge from AOC?
"I think there is a deep sense of outrage and betrayal," AOC explained to CNN shortly after Schumer's decision.
She even said that Democrats could reject their party leader's decision, a statement that should not be taken lightly:
"We have time to correct course on this decision. Senate Democrats can vote no. We can correct course, and that is the most important thing in front of us right now."
Even if AOC has been relatively quiet about the idea of her gunning to replace Schumer in the Senate, other liberals have not.
Pass the Torch is a grassroots Democratic group that gained notoriety after calling for former President Joe Biden to leave the 2024 presidential race.
They're one of the groups calling the loudest for AOC to consider challenging Schumer for his seat atop the Senate.
"Chuck Schumer is unwilling and unable to meet the moment," the group said in a statement on March 14.
"His sole job is to fight MAGA’s fascist takeover of our democracy — instead, he’s directly enabling it. Americans desperately need a real opposition party to stand up to Trump."
While calling Trump's presidency a "fascist" takeover will definitely hurt their appeal to mainstream audiences, there's a chance we could look back on this and see it as one of the catalysts to AOC's next big step.
