Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis won praise from Democrats last year when she indicted President-elect Donald Trump on racketeering charges over his conduct following the 2020 election.

However, the president-elect scored a major win this week when an appeals court moved to dismiss Willis from his case.

Trial judge's ruling overturned

As NBC News reported, that decision came on Thursday after Trump appealed an earlier ruling from Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee.

McAfee acknowledged that Willis had created the "appearance of impropriety" through her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Yet the judge ultimately concluded that Willis could continue to prosecute the president-elect provided that Wade resigned from Willis' office, something which he promptly did.

The appeals court disagreed, stating, "After carefully considering the trial court’s findings in its order, we conclude that it erred by failing to disqualify DA Willis and her office."

Trump's attorney calls decision "well-reasoned and just"

While the court stopped short of dismissing Trump's charges altogether, they cannot be pursued by Willis' office and will need to be taken up by officials in another county.

NBC News noted that many legal experts see such a move being highly unlikely to happen, suggesting that the case will likely be dropped.

It also quoted a statement put out by Trump attorney Steve Sadow, who praised the decision as being "well-reasoned and just."

Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung spoke up as well, declaring that "the American People have demanded an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and a swift dismissal of all the Witch Hunts against him."

Cheung went on to add that he is looking "forward to uniting our country as President Trump Makes America Great Again."

Trump says his prosecution was a "disgrace to justice"

In an interview with Fox News, Trump slammed Willis' efforts as being "corrupt" and a "disgrace to justice" before adding that they are now "entirely dead."

The president-elect went to insist that the "wonderful patriots who have been caught up in this for years" deserve "an apology."

"It was started by the Biden DOJ as an attack on his political opponent, Donald Trump," he declared. "They used anyone and anybody, and she has been disqualified, and her boyfriend has been disqualified, and they stole funds and went on trips."
