Armed man arrested outside CIA headquarters on same day that declassified JFK assassination files are released

On Wednesday, the Trump administration made good on a promise to release thousands of declassified documents related to the 1963 assassination of former President John F. Kennedy, and conspiracy theorists quickly dove into those files in search of evidence to support the notion that the CIA played a role in Kennedy's untimely death.

Just hours after those files were publicly released, a man with a handgun appeared outside the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and made multiple threats of violence before he was eventually arrested by police, the Daily Mail reported.

It remains unclear at this time, however, whether there was any link between the man's actions outside CIA headquarters and the release of the JFK files.

Armed incident outside CIA headquarters

According to the Daily Mail, a "disheveled" looking man with long hair and a beard who was wearing camouflage clothing and holding a handgun was spotted sitting on a bench outside the CIA headquarters in Virginia on Wednesday morning.

That man reportedly pointed his gun at the building on at least one occasion and is reported to have made multiple unspecified threats.

Unsurprisingly, there was a "massive" response from law enforcement that reportedly included local, state, and federal police along with SWAT teams and a bomb squad, though there were no reports of any explosives in the incident.

Lockdowns were ordered at the CIA and a nearby school, and streets in the vicinity were temporarily blocked by authorities while a standoff ensued.

Eventually, the man was taken into custody without further incident, and reports indicate that no shots were fired and there were no injuries or deaths.

Hours-long standoff between police and armed man with "mental health" problems

Local CBS affiliate WUSA reported that the armed man outside the CIA headquarters was believed to have been suffering from a "mental health crisis" when he appeared outside the building with a handgun and began making threats.

The CIA Police were said to be leading an investigation into the incident with support from local enforcement agencies, such as the Fairfax County Police and that agency's Special Operations Division.

According to local Fox affiliate WTTG, the incident began shortly before 11 a.m. Eastern time and lasted approximately five hours before the man was taken into custody.

The situation was described as a "barricade incident," but no further explanation was given as to what the man may have been using as a barricade between himself and the police.

Man eventually arrested and tentatively identified

At one point during the standoff between the man and the police, per WTTG, a CIA spokesperson revealed nothing that wasn't already known about the situation in a statement, and simply said, "There is an ongoing incident that law enforcement is currently responding to outside CIA Headquarters. Additional details will be made available as appropriate."

Local ABC affiliate WJLA reported that the man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon by the Fairfax County Police, and has been tentatively identified as Robert Scofield, though no further confirmation of that was issued and no information has been provided yet about what he may be criminally charged with.
