As Sanders's arms ban fails, the number of anti-Israel senators drops from 19 to 15
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)'s proposal for an arms embargo against Israel failed in the Senate on Thursday with just 15 votes.
The 15 votes against the proposal came from a group of senators who have been vocal critics of Israel's actions in the Middle East, as Breitbart News reported.
However, the number of senators against the bill is down from 19 votes against a similar measure in November of last year.
To this point, Sanders has been among Congress's most outspoken critics of Israel's leadership.
From Sanders
Although he acknowledged the tragedy of the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023, and stated that Israel should be able to defend itself, he has also advocated for an arms embargo that would obstruct Israel from doing so.
According to Breitbart News, the Senate rejected three proposals by Sanders in November to prohibit arms sales to Israel, with as many as 19 anti-Israel votes.
The Senate, which is now under Republican control, defeated Sanders's proposals even more decisively on Thursday.
Another Report
The Times of Israel reported on the change, saying that among the four senators who voted in favor of the resolution, contrary to their previous votes, was Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia.
"The others were fellow Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen — who announced earlier this month she will not seek reelection next year — and Maine Senator Angus King, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats."
Additionally, the other notable "yes" vote was from New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim, who is more of a moderate Democrat, and visited Israel earlier this year, advocating for the release of hostages.
More Senators Takes
According to the Times, the other fourteen Democrats who blocked the weapons deal were Mazie Hirono, Ben Ray Luján, Bernie Sanders, Chris Van Hollen, Jeff Merkley, Ed Markey, Tim Kaine, Elizabeth Warren, Martin Heinrich, Brian Schatz, Tina Smith, Dick Durbin, Peter Welch, and Chris Murphy.
The partial arms embargo imposed by former President Joe Biden, who withheld heavy precision bombs from Israel in response to Israel's entry into Rafah last year to combat Hamas, has been lifted by President Donald Trump.
Trump's relationship with Israel has always been a strong one, while Democrats have taken a more frosty view of late due to liberals' alliance with Palestine.
In what was a strange turn of events, considering the restrictive nature of the primary religion in Palestine and the treatment of women and outsiders, groups like Black Lives Matter and other progressives have been fierce supporters of the Israeli invaders.
