Ashley Biden files for divorce from plastic surgeon
Joe Biden's daughter Ashley is filing for divorce from her husband of 13 years, Dr. Howard Krein.
The divorce papers were filed in Philadelphia, where the couple has been living.
In a post on Instagram, Ashley, who has no children, appeared to celebrate the divorce as a fresh start.
"New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” she wrote.
Divorce in Biden family
Ashley is the only child of Joe Biden and his wife Jill. She is the half-brother of Hunter Biden, the former president's only surviving child from his first marriage.
The details of Ashley Biden's divorce are not clear, as divorce records in Philadelphia are not public.
Like her half-brother Hunter, Ashley is known for having a tumultuous personal life, including struggles with drugs and tax woes. She attracted wider attention in 2020 after the theft of her diary, which contained a passage alluding to "showers with dad."
She has defended her father, including in a speech at the Democratic National Convention last year, where she shared a loving tribute that mentioned her wedding.
“At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,” she told the crowd.
“He was riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing the place settings, arranging the plants, and by the way, he was very emotional.”
Plastic surgeon
Krein is a plastic surgeon and ear, nose, and throat doctor at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia. Ashley, 44, was introduced to 59-year-old Krein by her late half-brother Beau.
The couple had a Catholic-Jewish wedding in 2012 at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church, where Ashley was baptized.
Krein stuck to tradition by asking Joe's permission first - and then proposed on a cliff in Big Sur, California.
Conflicts of interest
By marrying Joe Biden's daughter, Krein joined himself to a political family that is notorious for self-dealing.
Indeed, the doctor would come under scrutiny for conflicts of interest tied to his father-in-law's government work.
Krein, a health care investor, was involved in Biden's "Cancer Moonshot" initiative during his vice presidency.
In 2020, Krein advised Biden's campaign on coronavirus. This raised eyebrows as Krein's venture capital firm was seeking to profit from the pandemic response.
The Biden family's political influence - and their potential for cash grabs - is on the wane after Biden fell into public disgrace last year with the sudden implosion of his presidency, which was capped by a pardon spree for his son and other relatives.
