Assassination attempt halts Dem mutiny against Biden
While former President Donald Trump has garnered a lot of attention because of the attempted assassination that took place over the weekend, the current president hasn't gone without gain.
In the days leading up to the attempt on Trump's life, President Joe Biden was crushing pressure to drop out of the 2024 election, due to concerns about his mental acuity.
Calls from Republicans and Democrats were growing, citing his age and his performance at the last presidential debate, causing internal turmoil among Democrats, as The New York Post reported.
A Reprieve
However, that came to a screeching halt on Saturday after gunshots rang out at a presidential rally for Trump, where the former president was shot in the side of his head, piercing his ear, and causing a national outcry against violence in politics.
In Butler, Pennsylvania, an assassination attempt on Trump, Biden's opponent, nearly killed the Republican candidate and sent shockwaves across the country.
The momentous event instantly overshadowed any attempt by Democrats to reclaim the top spot on the ticket.
Democrat Response
That attempt on Trump's life “slows the momentum on people calling for him [Biden] to step aside,” one Democratic campaign operative told The Post.
“And at the very least, this coming week is now probably a wash on any effort to push him out,” the operative noted. “There’s only so many weeks.”
This is the closest attempt on the life of a president since Ronald Reagan in 1981, and Democrats have shifted their attention to it because they are aware that the current situation is a politically precarious one.
Presidential Response
After the attack, both 81-year-old Biden and 78-year-old Trump urged the country to stand together. Shortening his weekend getaway to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Biden contacted Trump to convey his concern.
As the nation recovers from the incident, the Biden-Harris campaign reportedly wasted no time in putting a pause on its nasty advertisements targeting Trump.
“Look, there’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country," Biden said Saturday evening.
"We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this," he added.
When the push to remove Biden from the ballot was still underway, it garnered support from at least 20 congressional Democrats, who publicly called on Biden to step out of the race.
