Attorney general warns law schools that DOJ will not tolerate racist DEI policies
Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at halting the use of illegal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices.
Attorney General Pam Bondi cited that order this week when she announced that the Department of Justice will ensure that it is complied with.
Bondi calls racial discrimination "abominable"
According to Breitbart, Bondi has sent a memorandum to every law school dean regarding "pervasive and repugnant race-based preferences."
"We have come too far as a nation to allow the abominable practice of discrimination on the basis of one’s race to continue," the attorney general declared.
Bondi stressed that "President Trump has been clear" about how race and sex-based preferences in education "violate the civil rights laws of this country and will no longer be tolerated."
Breitbart noted how Bondi's memorandum comes less than a month after the American Bar Association voted to suspend enforcement of something known as Standard 206.
ABA required law schools to show "a commitment to diversity and inclusion"
Part of the ABA's Standards and Rules of Procedure for Approval of Law Schools, it maintains that institutions must "demonstrate by concrete action a commitment to diversity and inclusion."
This includes working to ensure that a school's faculty as well as its student body "are diverse with respect to gender, race and ethnicity."
The ABA announced in February that it is "currently in the process of reviewing and amending Standard 206 to ensure that it complies with federal law."
Bondi observed in her memorandum how "the ABA has assured the Department of Justice that it ‘will not require a law school to violate the law to comply with its accreditation standards’ and acknowledges that its status as a federally recognized accrediting agency 'is a privilege,' not a right."
"Universities cannot lawfully pursue diversity by any means"
However, she quickly took issue with assurances by the ABA "that it “has not” required law schools to violate the law in the past."
"That is absolutely false," the attorney general asserted. "Standard 206 has been on the books for years, and it requires blatantly illegal discrimination."
"If diversity is defined in terms of race and sex outcomes, then universities cannot lawfully pursue diversity by any means," Bondi wrote as she drew to a close.
A DOJ official was quoted as telling Breitbart that Bondi’s memorandum represents "a key example of the Department of Justice’s ongoing efforts to get harmful DEI practices out of American institutions and ensure that our legal system is built on a foundation of merit."
