Special Counsel Jack Smith made headlines last week after his investigation into former President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents resulted in 37 criminal charges.

CNN has reported that there is an audio recording in which Trump can be heard admitting that he did not declassify the material in question. However, Americans are still waiting to hear the tape.

Recording alleging features Trump discussing classified plan to invade Iran

According to CNN, it obtained a transcript of the recording, which was allegedly during an interview Trump gave in 2021 for a book.

"As president, I could have declassified, but now I can’t," Trump reportedly said while discussing "highly confidential" and "secret" documents pertaining to a planned invasion of Iran.

"Well, with Milley -- uh, let me see that, I'll show you an example. He said that I wanted to attack Iran. Isn't that amazing? I have a big pile of papers, this thing just came up," the former president was quoted as saying.

Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told ABC News host George Stephanopoulos on Sunday that the evidence is "damning" for Trump's case.

Former FBI agent: "These are all his own words"

"This audiotape simultaneously makes out many of the elements ... of the crimes and simultaneously rebuts and debunks his defenses," Bharara insisted.

"He couldn’t declassify telepathically. He couldn't declassify automatically. There was no standing order. And this tape makes that very, very clear," the former prosecutor went on to add.

Former FBI Special Agent Asha Rangappa agreed, stating, "These are all his own words that he’s using. There’s audiotape of him knowing that this is classified information."

Trump: "I don't know anything about it"

The audio file has yet to be released, and Newsweek reported that Trump denied having any knowledge of it in a recent Iowa town hall event with Fox News host Sean Hannity.

"I don't know anything about it. All I know is this. Everything I did was right," the former president declared, adding, "We had the Presidential Records Act, which I abided by 100 percent."

"When you look at it, it's another, it's a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time. It's a hoax," Trump said of Smith's investigation. "And it has to do more than anything else with trying to interfere with the election."
