Biden calls families of Americans detained in Afghanistan
President Joe Biden, over the weekend, spoke with the families of several Americans who remain detained in Afghanistan.
The New York Post specifically reports that Biden spoke with three families on Sunday, vowing to bring home their loved ones.
This, of course, all stems from the Biden administration's botched withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. There, will be more on this in a moment.
To this day, several years later, America - and American families - are still dealing with the fallout from the situation.
The latest
The three hostages are Ryan Corbett, George Glezmann, and Mahmood Habibi.
The Post reports:
Biden’s administration has been negotiating with the Taliban since at least July about a US proposal to release the three Americans — Ryan Corbett, George Glezmann and Mahmood Habibi — in exchange for Muhammad Rahim al-Afghani, a high-profile prisoner held in Guantanamo Bay . . .
The Biden administration, though, has not had much success with these efforts.
Ahmad Habibi, Mahmood Habibi’s brother, is quoted by the outlet as saying:
President Biden was very clear in telling us that he would not trade Rahim if the Taliban do not let my brother go. He said he would not leave him behind. My family is very grateful that he is standing up for my brother.
Biden, however, is leaving office very soon, which means that the matter will be left to President-Elect Donald Trump.
America "safer"
Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly criticized the Biden administration for the botched withdrawal, arguing that it is the source of many foreign affairs catastrophes, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war.
In a recent report, it was revealed that outgoing National security adviser Jake Sullivan actually asked Biden to resign over the situation, but that biden would not let him.
Many have taken this as an admission by the Biden administration that it did wrong. However, Sullivan has taken a different approach in public.
In a recent interview, he actually claimed that the Biden administration has actually managed to make America "safer." He said:
Our alliances are stronger than where we found them four years ago . . . And our adversaries and competitors are weaker across the board. Russia's weaker, Iran's weaker, China's weaker, and all the while we kept America out of wars. I think that the American people are safer, and the country is better off than we were four years ago, and we're handing off that to the next team, as well as having the engines of American power humming
Many have subsequently accused Sullivan of living in an alternate reality, considering that this statement does appear to be contrary to fact.
