Biden criticizes Trump's plan to use tariffs

President Joe Biden does not agree with President-Elect Donald Trump's plan to use tariffs to get other countries to take action.

Biden made this clear in a statement that he made on Thanksgiving Day, according to Fox News.

"The last thing we need"

The president suggested, in his statement, that the use of tariffs could destroy the United States' relationship with other countries.

"I hope that [President-elect Trump] rethinks it. I think it's a counterproductive thing to do," Biden said.

He added, "We're surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Oceans and two allies — Mexico and Canada. The last thing we need to do is begin to screw up those relationships. I think that we got them in a good place."

Background

Trump, at the time of this writing, has not responded to Biden's statement, but, clearly, he would disagree.

Fox reports, "Earlier this week, Trump vowed to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada in an effort to get both nations to do more to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs into the U.S."

This came after Trump, in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election, made it clear that he intends to use tariffs to fix a lot of problems that the United States has faced under the Biden administration.

The election is over, but Trump is still not sworn into office. Despite this, it would appear that Trump is already having success with his tariff plan.

Agreement reached?

Trump has spoken to both Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the president of Mexico, and Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada. And, it would appear that Trump is already getting his way.

Following his conversation with Pardo, Trump released a statement, saying:

Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!

It appears to be a similar story with Trudeau.

Reports indicate that Trudeau even made a surprise visit to Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, and there is little doubt that the two discussed the tariff threat while Trudeau was there.

Nothing has been finalized yet. But, so far, it would appear that Biden is wrong about Trump's tariff plan.
