Biden education secretary vows to shut down Christian university

Miguel Cardona, the Biden administration's Secretary of Education, has vowed to shut down the largest Christian university in the United States.

Fox News reports that Cardona made the promise during a House Appropriations Committee hearing that took place on April 10, 2024.

There, Cardona not only vowed to shut down Grand Canyon University (GCU), but he also vowed to shut down other Christian schools as well.

He did so during an exchange with U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).

Here's what Cardona said:

The exchange between Cardona and DeLauro started with the congresswoman asking Cardona what he has been doing to shut down GCU, which she referred to as "a predatory for-profit school."

DeLauro said:

Last year, your Department took action against Grand Canyon University, a predatory for-profit college, over the school’s failure to accurately disclose its cost to students, driving up the true cost for those students requiring for them to pay for continuation courses before they would graduate – scam courses added about $10,000 or more to the cost of education to these kids.

This is when Cardona responded by saying that the Biden administration is looking to shut down schools like GCU.

"Going after predatory schools preying on first generation students. They have flashy marketing materials, but the product is not worth the paper it is printed on. Increased enforcement budget to go after these folks and crack down. Levied largest fine in history against a school that lied about costs and terminated a school from Title IV," Cardona said.

He added, "We are cracking down not only to shut them down, but to send a message not to prey on students."

It's already happening

Fox reports that the Biden administration, back in November, hit GCU with a massive fine, claiming that the school misled students about their tuition. GCU has since appealed the fine.

"GCU appealed a $37.7 million fine imposed by the department in November on allegations that the Arizona-based higher learning institution misled students about the cost of its doctoral programs over several years," Fox reports.

The outlet goes on to note that this fine is significantly higher than other fines that the Department of Education has doled out. GCU, at the time of this writing, continues to fight the fine.

In response, there is a movement being led by the American Principles Project (APP) to protect GCU and similar schools.

The APP claims that the fine is just one example of how the Biden administration "is punishing schools that do not conform to their progressive ideology."
