Biden kills trade deal with Britain

Joe Biden has officially pulled the plug on a trade deal with Britain - dashing the hopes of Brexiteers like Nigel Farage, who called the president "anti-British."

The White House is shelving talks of a bilateral post-Brexit agreement until after the presidential election, Politico reported.

Insiders said pressure from Democratic Senators helped kill the talks.

Biden kills the deal

The White House was involved in "foundational talks", but they have fallen apart over wide differences between the parties.

It likely didn't take much to convince Biden to back away from a deal, however.

Democrats allied with Biden say a free trade deal would undermine Biden's pitch to protect American workers from foreign competition. Biden's "Made in America" messaging echoes - one might even say outright steals from Trump's own protectionist platform, which included controversial tariffs.

If elected to another term, Trump has pledged to enact sweeping tariffs to revive American industry.

But sources in the British government told the Daily Telegraph that they believe Trump would be more open to negotiation.

"When an agreement was being drawn up, it was because Trump had said that a trade deal with the UK was a possibility, so a non-Biden White House might be more amenable. We have always said on our end that if America wants to do a deal, we’re ready to do a deal," sources said.

“There’s a lot you can do outside a trade deal, but Trump was previously someone who said that a trade deal was a possibility.”

Anti-British?

Britain has been on the "do not call" list for liberals like Biden and his former boss Obama, who famously warned Britain would go to the "back of the queue" for trade as punishment for leaving the EU.

Farage, who led the campaign for Britain's exit, acknowledged that striking a bilateral trade deal with the U.S. was always going to be challenging, but he said Biden's indifference proves his "anti-British" sentiment. Biden has often played up his Irish origins to project a rootsy image.

"I know that agriculture and elsewhere this was never going to be easy," Farage said. “But I’ve always had the feeling that Biden was pretty anti-British.”

Biden might be anti-British, but he's definitely anti-American.

Thankfully, Biden's odds of re-election are looking increasingly dodgy.
