Biden loses Catholic support

A new poll indicates that American Catholics have moved away from supporting President Joe Biden and toward supporting former President Donald Trump.

The poll, according to Fox News, comes from Pew Research.

This is the latest in a series of polls that show that Biden is losing the support of many different U.S. Demographics.

Some, no doubt, will be more costly than others. But, at some point, even the less costly ones will add up.

The results

Pew Research released this particular poll on April 30. What the pollster was doing in this poll was breaking down support for Trump or Biden by religious affiliation.

What Pew Research found when it did so was that only 43% of U.S. Catholics would support Biden in a head-to-head matchup with Trump. On the other hand, 55% of Catholics would support Trump in that matchup.

Fox News notes, "The 12% margin of support in favor of Trump marks a significant shift from 2020, when he held an extremely narrow lead — 50% to 49%."

It appears that the big change came specifically from Hispanic Catholics. To be clear, Biden has and continues to have the support of a majority of Hispanic Catholics. But, currently, Biden only leads Trump 49% to 47% with this group. Whereas, in 2020, Biden beat Trump 67% to 26%.

As the numbers would suggest, this is a huge shift.

Biden the "cafeteria Catholic"

Something that makes these results particularly interesting is that Biden is, himself, a Catholic, and he tries to use this fact to his advantage whenever he thinks he can.

Biden, however, has recently been called out by a number of U.S. Catholic leaders, including Washington, D.C., Archbishop Wilton Gregory. This took place just after Biden decided to dub Easter Sunday as a "transgender Day of Visibility."

Gregory responded by labeling Biden a "cafeteria Catholic."

"Like a number of Catholics, he picks and chooses dimensions of the faith to highlight while ignoring or even contradicting other parts," Gregory said, adding, "There are things that he chooses to ignore or he uses the current situation as a political pawn rather than saying, look: ‘my church believes this, I’m a good Catholic, I would like to believe this."

Biden holds numerous positions that clearly go against the teachings of the Catholic Church, which he claims to be a member of. The easiest example is abortion; Biden is strongly for abortion, while the Catholic Church, under the leadership of Pope Francis, is strongly against it.
