Biden pushes 'assault weapon' ban even though it wouldn't help prevent many shootings

In remarks on Tuesday about two recent mass shootings, President Joe Biden once again pushed a so-called "assault weapons" ban, even though he acknowledged that it wouldn't have prevented many recent shootings and a previous ban had been circumvented by gun manufacturers.

"Yesterday, Senator Feinstein—alongside Senators Murphy, Blumenthal and others— reintroduced a federal Assault Weapons Ban and legislation that would raise the minimum purchase age for assault weapons to 21," Biden said. "Even as we await further details on these shootings, we know the scourge of gun violence across America requires stronger action."

Never mind that his "stronger action" may not really help the situation, he wants to do it anyway.

While most mass shooters are in their 20s and 30s, Reason pointed out, shooters in four of the nine deadliest shootings since 2018 were under 21, giving Biden and his cronies a reason to restrict gun sales based on age.

Bans don't work

The problem is, they already know "assault weapons" bans don't work. Way back in 2019, Biden admitted in an essay in the New York Times that gun manufacturers found ways to "circumvent" the previous ban by making minor modifications that did not make the weapons any less deadly, but classified them outside the category of assault weapons.

Furthermore, studies showed no significant reduction in shootings during that ban, from 1994 to 2004.

The ban proposed by Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) would also be vulnerable to circumvention because of its requirements.

For instance, a semi-automatic rifle that accepts detachable magazines is considered an assault weapon if it has a pistol grip, a forward grip, a folding or adjustable stock, a barrel shroud, or a threaded barrel. If any of these features are removed, it would not be an assault weapon even though the rifle's fundamental capabilities are not impacted. It is just as deadly, but would not be banned.

Gun control doesn't work

Biden and Democrats can't accept the reality that if someone wants to shoot people, they will be able to find a way to do it no matter what kind of restrictions are placed on gun ownership.

Just look at Chicago, the worst example of an American big city with very strict gun control laws and the highest number of shootings in the country.

Just like our Founding Fathers knew to be true, taking guns out of law-abiding people's hands makes things worse every single time because there's no good way to get guns out of criminals' hands.

In a country like ours, gun control just doesn't work.

Al about control

Democrats are all about control, and they don't care about anything the Constitution has to say about it.

And only a razor-thin majority in the House and the Senate filibuster are holding them back from accomplishing it.
