Biden seeks 20-year ban on drilling in Nevada mountain range
As he prepares to leave the White House in disgrace, lame duck Joe Biden is working around the clock in the time he has left to undermine his successor.
In a last-minute decision, Biden moved to ban fossil fuel production in Nevada's Ruby Mountains for 20 years.
Biden is asking to withdraw 264,000 acres of the scenic mountain range from federal leasing. The move immediately bars any oil or gas exploration in the region for two years - as Trump prepares to take office with a pledge to "drill baby drill."
Biden blocks drilling
20 years is the longest the Interior Department can bar leasing without input from Congress. Biden's application triggers a 90-day comment period while the Department considers the ban.
Biden's Interior Department Secretary Deb Haaland hailed Biden's move as a plus for the environment, recreation and local native tribes.
"The Ruby Mountains are cherished by local communities for their scenic value, cultural heritage, numerous wildlife, and benefit to the local economy through a thriving outdoor recreation industry," she said.
“Today, we are taking an important and sensible step to pause new mining claims to ensure that we have the science and public input necessary to inform proposed protections of the Ruby Mountains area for future generations,” she added.
Biden targets Trump agenda
Biden has been consistently hostile to oil and gas producers throughout his presidency, while treating the green energy industry with favor. He has bragged about signing the most impactful climate bill in history, the Inflation Reduction Act, which shoveled billions in subsidies to "renewable energy" corporations.
Ahead of Trump's inauguration, the Department of Energy has been scrambling to finalize loans from Biden's "Green Bank," which received billions from the Inflation Reduction Act to support climate projects.
Trump has pledged to unwind Biden's "Green New Scam" and prioritize fossil fuel production once again in order to ease energy costs and reduce inflation.
In addition to blocking Trump's energy agenda, Biden has been selling off unused border wall materials - although a judge ordered him to stop - in an effort to obstruct Trump's immigration plans.
On the foreign policy front, Biden has continued to inflame the conflict in Ukraine, even as Trump calls for a quick end to the bloody war.
In a move that will define his legacy, Biden commuted the death sentences of nearly every man on death row, in order to stop Trump from carrying out their punishments.
