Biden unveils 'major initiative on limiting' the Supreme Court
President Joe Biden continues to face demands from some within his own party to step down as the Democratic nominee following his awful debate performance last month.
In what may be an effort to dampen those calls, Biden recently laid out plans to attack the Supreme Court's current structure.
Biden promises "major initiative on limiting the court"
According to Fox News, the Washington Post has obtained transcripts of a telephone call in which the president discussed his desire to establish term limits for the justices along with an enforceable ethics code.
"I'm going to need your help on the Supreme Court, because I’m about to come out — I don't want to prematurely announce it — but I’m about to come out with a major initiative on limiting the court," Biden was quoted as saying.
"I've been working with constitutional scholars for the last three months, and I need some help," the president went on to assert.
Many Democrats harbor animosity towards America's highest body following a series of controversial decisions regarding abortion and gun rights.
Those feelings intensified late last month when the Supreme Court ruled that president's enjoy a presumption of immunity for official actions, a decision which makes prosecuting former President Donald Trump more difficult.
Chuck Todd says Biden is motivated by "desperation"
However, Biden's move was met with skepticism by liberal journalist Chuck Todd, who serves as NBC News' chief political analyst.
"Look at the desperation in the air for Joe Biden right now," Fox News quoted Todd as saying during a Tuesday night panel discussion at the Republican National Convention.
"All of the sudden, out of nowhere, he's trying to do a Supreme Court reform for another way of playing to the left, because right now his biggest supporters are progressives. Because those that are in swing districts, they want him off [the ticket]," Todd added.
What's more, a promise to reform the Supreme Court seems unlikely to placate critics like Colorado Democratic Rep. Brittany Pettersen, who asked Biden to end his candidacy last week.
Democratic congresswoman calls on Biden to "pass the torch"
"Joe Biden saved our country once, and I'm joining the growing number of people in my district and across the country to ask him to do it again," Pettersen wrote in a statement posted to social media.
With deep appreciation and love, @joebiden please pass the torch. Read my statement here: pic.twitter.com/AN0c3JcApF

"Please pass the torch to one of our many capable Democratic leaders so we have the best chance to defeat Donald Trump, who is the greatest threat to the foundation of this country that we have ever faced," she continued.
Pettersen further insisted that her "son and my constituents can't suffer the consequences of inaction at this critical moment."
