Billy Long to leave as IRS commissioner, will be replaced by Scott Bessent
The high-profile job shakeups across Washington D.C. are not over yet, and the latest one involves the commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
According to The Hill, former Republican Rep. Billy Long announced he will be leaving his post as IRS commissioner only two months after he was confirmed by the Senate. A White House official confirmed the move, the outlet noted.
Long will reportedly be replaced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Long's exit was first reported by The New York Times.
While Long's exit from the agency isn't a result of Trump's sweeping employee reductions across multiple government agencies, the president continues to work to eliminate as many wasteful and irrelevant positions as possible.
What's going on?
Trump has worked overtime to crack down on the version of the IRS that was enhanced under former President Joe Biden, who hired thousands via Democratic legislators in an effort to crack down on tax cheats and generate more revenue for the government.
The Hill noted:
The National Taxpayer Advocate’s midyear report found that the IRS’s taxpayer services division was expected to lose roughly 22 percent of its workforce.
Long released a statement on his exit from the agency, thanking the president and the Trump administration for allowing him to serve in that capacity, while also announcing his new position as an ambassador to Iceland.
"It is a honor to serve my friend President Trump and I am excited to take on my new role as the ambassador to Iceland," Long said in a statement. “I am thrilled to answer his call to service and deeply committed to advancing his bold agenda. Exciting times ahead!"
Now that Billy Long has been removed as IRS commissioner, when is @SecScottBessent going to fire all of the Lois Lerner holdovers who are still in senior roles at the IRS?
Why won’t Bessent fire Obama’s henchmen at the IRS who continue to target and maliciously audit GOP donors…

There have been more acting IRS commissioners under President Donald Trump's second term than any other president in recent history.
Social media responds
Users across social media reacted to the news of Long's departure from the agency.
"Can we just give Secretary Bessent, I don't know, a day? A week? A month?" one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, "Just abolish the IRS. That would take care of it."
It'll be interesting to see who finally ends up as the permanent IRS commissioner.
