FBI's Bongino reveals Kirk assassination probe is looking into a 'potential broader network' of involved individuals
In the wake of the horrific political assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, suspicions were raised that the alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson, may not have acted entirely on his own to commit the tragic murder during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University.
On Monday, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed in media interviews that the Bureau was investigating whether a "network" of individuals had advance knowledge of or provided assistance to Robinson's alleged criminal act, according to the New York Post.
That includes a probe of who may have been aware of concerning statements Robinson made in online forums about Kirk before the assassination, as well as if any individuals aided Robinson's efforts ahead of time, during the college campus event, or after the murder had occurred.
Investigating a "potential broader network" involved in the attack
On Monday, Deputy Director Bongino appeared on Newsmax and told host Rob Schmitt was looking into some "significant developments" surrounding the Kirk assassination, including the possibility that a "broader network of people" may have known of or provided assistance to the public murder.
"The only question is the timeline that other people knew about the incident. Did they know before? Did they know afterward?" Bongino said of statements Robinson posted online opposing Kirk and his viewpoints. "When you read some of the traffic, it's unclear if that message was received before or after."
"It is not a safe harbor to go on a platform and say, 'I can threaten to kill or harass someone,'" he continued of the messages Robinson posted in Discord chat forums. "We'll go anywhere to look for you if we believe you committed a crime."
"This is not the end of the investigation. It's not even the end of the beginning," Bongino stressed. "We are investigating a potential broader network of people who may have known."
"We're not the Federal Bureau of Fairy Tales. We're the Federal Bureau of Investigation," he added later. "If you break the law and threaten to kill or in fact violently attack someone … you don't get a pass because you disagreed with his politics."
"People may have known in advance"
Earlier on Monday, during an interview with Fox News host Bill Hemmer, Deputy Director Bongino revealed, "If this was a larger effort, if there was any aiding and abetting, whether it be financial or someone who knew the specifics of it and failed to report that, we’re looking into that. There’s not going to be a stone left unturned."
He noted that evidence had been uncovered that Robinson had voiced his violent intentions toward Kirk before the attack transpired, and said, "You see this a lot in targeted violence cases, assassinations, school shootings, where the individual expresses in advance his desire to do these specific things. That appears to be the case here as well."
"It appears from the data we’ve accumulated that this ideology had infected him and had taken over," Bongino asserted of the alleged killer's leftism. "He was intent on making Charlie his target, and people may have known in advance."
"It’s fairly obvious this was an ideologically motivated attack," he added. "Charlie Kirk is a conservative commentator who sadly and tragically gave his life underneath a sign asking people to challenge his ideas, the very essence of our constitutional republic."
"Multiple warning signs" ahead of assassination
According to the Post, the FBI is probing "multiple warning signs" around Robinson and the potential for an "extended network" of individuals to have "aided and abetted" the assassination, either by failing to report the alleged shooter's murderous intentions or by providing material support to ensure the killing was a success.
That includes Robinson's roommate and alleged transgender romantic partner, as well as pro-trans and "furries" groups online, members of chat forums on Discord and Steam, and a leftist group known as Armed Queers SLC, which took down its social media pages immediately after the assassination of Kirk.
