Border czar Tom Homan sends stark warning to Mamdani
President Trump's border czar is warning Zohran Mamdani to "get out of the way" as the New York mayoral candidate threatens to defy federal immigration law.
“Good luck on that,” Homan told reporters at the White House Monday.
“We’re going to be in New York City, and President Trump said it two weeks ago, we’re going to double down, triple down on sanctuary cities."
Mamdani facing arrest
New York City was slammed with a large influx of illegal aliens during the Biden border crisis, which led current mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat seeking re-election as an independent, to embrace cooperation with Trump.
The city's voters took a notable swing to the right in the 2024 presidential election, with Trump expanding his voter base in places like Queens and the Bronx.
Americans sent Trump to the White House to deport illegal immigrants, but Mamdani has pledged to do everything possible to stop ICE agents from doing their jobs in New York.
The assemblyman from Queens won an upset in the Democratic primary in June after campaigning as an unapologetic radical, labeling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) a "rogue agency."
The rise of the Ugandan-born socialist, who is a naturalized citizen, has raised concern far outside New York's five boroughs. President Trump has already threatened to arrest the "communist" if he becomes mayor and obstructs ICE operations in America's largest city.
"We don't need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I'm going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation," Trump said last week.
Flood the zone
Trump has a warm spot for New York, his hometown and the place where he built his real estate legacy, and he has pledged to do whatever it takes to keep it safe from Mamdani's agenda.
"New York City will run properly. I’m going to bring New York back. I love New York,” the president said at a Cabinet meeting Tuesday.
“We’re going to straighten out New York. It’s going to — maybe we’re going to have to straighten it out from Washington.”
Homan is staying consistent with Trump's message: the federal government won't allow New York City to protect dangerous criminals.
“I’ve said it before, we’ll flood the zone with sanctuary cities. If they don’t let us arrest a bad guy in the county jail, they’re going to arrest them in the community, we’re going to arrest them at a work site,” he said.
