British authorities took a man into custody this week after a murdered woman was found dead in her Italian home.

According to Sky News, the body of 66-year-old British citizen Michele Faiers was uncovered at a residence near the town of Casoli on Wednesday morning.

Suspect is a 74-year-old man from Shepshed

That grisly discovery in Italy was quickly followed by the arrest of a 74-year-old suspect in the English town of Shepshed.

Detective Inspector David Greenhalgh serves with the Leicestershire Police, and he provided a statement about the case to Sky News.

Italian police have identified the suspect as being Michael Whitbread

"We are continuing to work with authorities both in the United Kingdom and Italy regarding this incident," the law enforcement officer was quoted as saying.

"Ms Faiers' family have asked for privacy at this time and I would ask that this is respected," Greenhalgh continued, adding that the arrested suspect's name is not being made public at this time.

However, the British radio station LBC reported that Italian police have identified the man as being Michael Whitbread. They also revealed that the victim was stabbed seven times in the back.

Sky News noted that the East Midlands special operations unit is actively collaborating with Italian authorities as well as the UK Foreign Office.

The Leicestershire Police issued another statement the following day which explained that the 74-year-old suspect is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court over the weekend.

"Hearing is listed as part of the extradition process"

"The man, who was arrested in Shepshed on Wednesday night (1 November), has not been charged with a criminal offense. The hearing is listed as part of the extradition process," it explained.

"Detectives from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) major crime team are continuing to liaise with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the extradition team in the CPS’s Serious Economic and Organized Crime and International Directorate and Italian authorities regarding the incident," the statement stressed.
