Andre Braughter, known for his roles in "Brooklyn Nine Nine" and "Homicide," has died at the age of 61.

The actor passed away following a brief illness, according to a statement from his representative, with no additional details disclosed.

His work

"Braugher is perhaps best known for his comedic role in the 2013-21 Fox-NBC sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, on which he played Capt. Raymond Holt," the Washington Examiner reported.

"Brugher won his first Emmy in 1998, for outstanding lead actor in a drama series, and he won for his work on Homicide," it added.

His awards

"Braugher was also known for his voice work, appearing in several episodes of Netflix's 'Bojack Horseman,' and in the animated films 'Superman/Batman: Apocalypse,' for which he voiced Darkseid, and Dreamworks' 'Spirit Untamed,'" CBS  News reported.

"Braugher earned a total of 11 Emmy nominations throughout his career, along with two Golden Globe nods and 22 NAACP Image Award nominations. Born and raised in Chicago, Braugher earned a bachelor of arts from Stanford University and a master of fine arts from Juilliard in New York City," it continued.

A family focus

"He told Variety his family was more important than pursuing a big lead role. 'It’s been an interesting career, but I think it could have been larger,' he said," according to the outlet.

"I think it could have spanned more disciplines: directing, producing, all these other different things. But it would have been at the expense of my own life," he noted.

Braugher leaves behind a wife, Ami Brabson, and three children. His wife also appeared in the series "Homicide" with him in a past role together where they met. They married in 1991.

The beloved actor's work was celebrated through many awards, leaving behind years of acting that touched the lives of many in a variety of contexts.

His passing is now mourned by family, friends and fans who will miss his shining personality that stood out in his many roles, offering many memories to those connected with his shows. More details may soon come to offer an explanation of the illness that took his life as many remain shocked at the sudden passing of the well-known personality.
