Rock star Bruce Springsteen delivers unsurprising endorsement of Harris-Walz ticket

For decades, some Republicans have tried to claim rock star Bruce Springsteen as one of their own, likely because of his purportedly patriotic and inspirational working-class messages and persona.

But Springsteen has made his liberal leanings known for decades, and that leftward stance was just reiterated with his formal endorsement of the Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, The Hill reported.

The endorsement of Harris and Walz by "The Boss" should come as no surprise, as he has been highly critical of Republican former President Donald Trump since he first ran for office years ago and has openly supported Democratic presidential candidates for the past 20 years.

Slammed Trump

In a video posted to Instagram, Springsteen, decked out in a plaid flannel jacket while seated alone at some small New Jersey diner, made his position on the 2024 matchup between VP Harris and former President Trump unmistakably clear.

"Donald Trump is the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime," the rock star said, echoing the same vitriolic rhetoric of Democrats and the media that has arguably led to at least two known assassination attempts against the GOP nominee.

"His disdain for the sanctity of our Constitution, the sanctity of democracy, the sanctity of the rule of law, and the sanctity of the peaceful transfer of power should disqualify him from the office of president, ever again," the hyperbolic critique of Trump continued.

Springsteen further opined that the Make America Great Again candidate "doesn’t understand the meaning of this country, its history, or what it means to be deeply American."

Endorsed Harris and Walz

The New York Post reported that after thoroughly trashing and expressing his clear disdain for former President Trump, Springsteen then shared his obvious choice for who he believes should win what he described as "one of the most consequential elections in our nation’s history."

VP Harris and Gov. Walz, in the view of the famed guitarist and singer, are "committed to a vision of this country that respects and includes everyone, regardless of class, religion, race, your political point of view, or sexual identity," per The Hill.

Further, Springsteen claimed that "they wanna grow our economy in a way that benefits all, not just the few, like me, on top. That’s the vision of America I’ve been consistently writing about for 55 years."

Springsteen has supported Democrats for decades

As noted, Springsteen's endorsement of the Harris-Walz ticket shouldn't shock anyone as the rock star has reliably endorsed every Democratic presidential nominee since the 2004 election cycle, according to the Post, including former Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and current President Joe Biden.

But his liberal leanings were made known even decades before he began issuing his quadrennial political endorsements, according to a 2014 Politico Magazine piece, which noted that Springsteen, prior to the release of his first album, had openly supported and donated funds to failed Democratic nominee George McGovern in 1972.

It was during the 1984 election cycle, however, after then-President Ronald Reagan spoke favorably of the rocker and co-opted lines from one of his songs to support his pro-America campaign message that the previously apolitical celebrity reacted negatively to the Republican politician's compliments and started to speak out on political issues and openly display his partisan leanings at concerts and in his lyrical content.

It seems likely that Springsteen was never on the side of Republicans in the first place, but if he was ever actually "lost" from the GOP camp, that happened several decades ago and he is almost certainly never coming back.
