California's First Lady shops in Beverly Hills as riots rage
As rioters take over the streets of Los Angeles, the governor of California, Gavin Newsom (D), seems troublingly unfazed. Indeed, the Democrat seems to live in a different universe entirely from the one inhabited by the people he governs.
Even as looters ransacked stores downtown, Newsom's wife, First Lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom, was seen shopping in tony Beverly Hills without a care in the world, the Daily Mail reported.
Newsom retreats to "oasis"
The First Lady took a pleasant stroll through One Beverly Hills, which is described on its website as an "urban oasis" offering a mix of luxurious development and nature.
Newsom sported $500 Common Project sneakers and a $2,500 Goyard tote bag as her bodyguard followed closely behind.
The images of comfort offer a striking contrast with the grim scenes coming out of downtown Los Angeles, where anti-ICE rioters have spent days attacking law enforcement with deadly objects and setting fires.
Pictures of ransacked storefronts, burning cars and rioters waving Mexican flags like conquering warlords evoke a Third World nation in the midst of a civil war - not so much an "urban oasis."
A spokesperson issued a vehement response to the Daily Mail over the First Lady's outing.
"The First Partner didn’t have a spa treatment yesterday, but she does have a prior skin cancer diagnosis and was picking up skin care products on her personal time," Newsom's reps said.
Governor out of touch
As LA burns, Newsom is busy picking a fight with President Trump over immigration - a winning issue for the president.
The governor's critics say he is sabotaging his future White House ambitions by mollycoddling rioters and downplaying the very real destruction they are causing - as he instead blames Trump for the chaos. Indeed, Newsom is suing to stop the president's deployment of the National Guard, which Newsom claims has escalated tensions.
"This isn't about public safety," Newsom wrote on X on Monday. "It's about stroking a dangerous President's ego."
While Newsom calls Trump's aggressive response unnecessary and intrusive, Trump says he was forced to intervene after Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass (D) lost control of the streets.
In a grim turn of events, a dead body was discovered on a sidewalk after a night of looting on Tuesday. But according to Democrats, everything is under control.
Then again, for the state's rich and politically connected elites - people who have bodyguards to protect them at all times - nothing in Los Angeles has really changed since last week, has it?
