California's Supreme Court greenlights Democrat gerrymandering

The California Supreme Court just signed off on what amounts to gerrymandering.

Breitbart News reports that the court issued its decision on Wednesday.

The result is unsurprising, considering that the court is controlled by the Democrats by a 6 to 1 majority. Liberals in the state, led by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, are now trying to claim that this is a win for democracy.

The latest

The Democrat proposal made it to the California Supreme Court after it was challenged by the GOP. Republicans took issue in particular with the Democrats' attempt to scrap a 30-day public notice period.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

A lawsuit Monday by legislative Republicans contended the hastily drafted ballot measure, scheduled for votes in both houses on Thursday, has not been published long enough to meet the public-notice requirements in the state Constitution.

The court, however, did not seem to mind. In fact, it gave the Democrats the okay to proceed without the public notice period.

The outlet writes:

The state Supreme Court opened the door Wednesday to plans by Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democrats to redraw California’s congressional districts in a gerrymander designed to pick up five seats, rejecting a Republican legal challenge.

Now, the proposal is going to be pushed through the California legislature and, after that, it will make it to Newsom's desk. California Democrats control the state, so there is little to be done at this point other than await the outcome of the special election and see where the state's electorate comes down on the question of the new maps.

Background

The Democrats are trying to claim that this is their way to fight back against the Republican-led redistricting plan that is being pursued in Texas. The Texas plan is endorsed by President Donald Trump.

Newsom signed California's proposed redistricting maps into law on Thursday.

Breitbart News separately reported:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed legislation Thursday evening to create new congressional maps designed by the Democrat-dominated legislature to eliminate half of the state’s Republican-held seats.

The outlet goes on to describe the unusual approach that California has taken.

It writes:

The so-called “Election Rigging Response Act” consists of bills that were stripped of their existing language, and filled with redistricting language, to evade a state requirement that legislation wait 30 days for approval. In doing so, Newsom and the Democrats set aside the state’s nominally independent redistricting commission, which was established by the voters in 2008 (and which is gamed by Democrats anyway).

Where things go from here, only time will tell.
