Calls for Sen. Menendez to resign grow within Dem Party
You know it's bad when members of your own party are threatening to kick you out of office if you refuse to resign.
That's exactly what's happening to embattled Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) after a jury found him guilty on all of the bribery-related charges he was facing for months, NBC News reported.
While many Democrats were too scared to publicly call on the corrupt New Jersey senator to resign prior to the guilty verdict, that has changed in a big way in the past 24 hours since the verdict.
High-profile senators are coming out of the woodwork making calls for Menendez to either step down immediately or face the embarrassing reality of being expelled from Congress.
What's going on?
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was the latest senator to demand that Menendez resign or face humiliation as calls grow for his immediate resignation. He released a brief statement to that effect.
"In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign," Schumer said Tuesday.
Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania was quite a bit more blunt than Leader Schumer in his call for the New Jersey senator to throw in the towel.
“As I said when he was charged, public service is a sacred trust and Senator Menendez has broken that trust,” Casey wrote on X. “Now that a jury of his peers has found him guilty on all 16 charges, including acting as a foreign agent, Senator Menendez should resign or face expulsion from the Senate.”

So far, all he has done is relinquish his chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which is not enough according to his colleagues.
More calls
"Senator Menendez has been found guilty of political corruption by a jury of his peers," Sen. Jacky Rosen (D) said in a statement.
Rosen added, "As I’ve already called for, I believe he should resign immediately from the U.S. Senate. If he refuses to resign, he should be expelled."
So far, Menendez has resisted the calls.
However, with Schumer and other ranking Democrats behind the push to get him out, it could only be a matter of time.
