Top campaign consultant resigns from Rep. Nancy Mace's gubernatorial run over claim of disloyalty to Trump
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who is running to be the next governor of South Carolina, likes to portray herself as a staunch ally and supporter of President Donald Trump, but that may not truly be the case, if a now-former top adviser is to be believed.
Political consultant Austin McCubbin, who's been advising Mace's campaign, abruptly resigned on Monday amid claims that the Republican congresswoman has "decided to turn her back on MAGA," according to the Washington Examiner.
McCubbin, who previously led Trump's 2024 re-election campaign operations in the Palmetto State, explained at length how Mace has become disloyal to the president, but Mace's campaign quickly hit back against the ex-adviser and proclaimed her continued fealty to Trump and his MAGA movement.
Top adviser resigns
In a Monday X post, McCubbin wrote, "Nancy Mace has yet again decided to turn her back on MAGA to hug the political cactus that is the Rand Paul + Thomas Massie wing of the Party. I have notified her and her team that I am resigning because of this."
"My name has been used publicly, while going back on her word to pay me, to trade on my Team Trump status and to work on her behalf with the White House, and I am 100% breaking with her campaign out of loyalty to the President," he continued. "The 2026 gubernatorial race has always been first and foremost a run for the President’s endorsement. South Carolina is Trump Country."
McCubbin pointed out that despite Mace previously aligning herself closely with the president, her campaign has recently accepted contributions from Sen. Rand Paul's (R-KY) political action committee, Protect Freedom PAC, and that as of last week, it became clear that "she’s fully embracing the Rand Paul + Thomas Massie wing for money."
"Nancy Mace is wittingly or unwittingly a proxy for Rand Paul’s 2028 presidential campaign," he asserted. "That’s the straw that broke the camel’s back."
Resignation is about "loyalty" to the president
McCubbin wasn't quite finished, though, as he proceeded to claim in his X post that Rep. Mace "wouldn’t hear it when I warned her about the political risks and offered alternative solutions. She accused me of mansplaining, a woke term used by people who hate men, who ironically are her best demographic."
He further insisted that he had no personal beef against either the congresswoman or Sen. Paul, and that his move was solely about "loyalty" to the president.
The GOP consultant wrote, "My loyalty lies with President Trump, my colleagues I worked with in the campaign trenches and the MAGA base that I had the privilege to work with as the Team Trump SC State Director."
McCubbin praised outgoing term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster, suggested South Carolinians would be wise to elect a successor who is "cut from the same cloth, where you know their word is their bond," and added, "My advice to the President, my friends in the White House, and South Carolina Trump voters: scratch her name from the list."
Campaign fires back against ex-adviser
According to The Hill, the Mace campaign was quick to respond to McCubbin's public resignation with claims that his move was prompted by a rejection of his request for more money, as well as that the congresswoman was the most pro-Trump candidate in South Carolina's gubernatorial race.
"Mr. McCubbin didn’t raise a dime for the campaign, or better yet, never even bothered showing up," an unnamed campaign spokesperson said in a statement. "When he demanded $10,000 a month for 'services' and was told no, he ran straight to X. Good luck with that."
"Nancy Mace has stood with President Trump since Day ONE," they added of the disloyalty claims. "Mr. McCubbin said it himself: 'Nancy Mace will be the most pro-Trump and America First Governor in the country.'"
