Canadian Prime Minister blames Trump for country's woes

President Donald Trump is in the crosshairs of new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as the country braces for its next election.

Both he and his Conservative opponent said Trump must respect Canada’s sovereignty in the wake of comments that could be seen as the start of a trade war, and definite threats of annexation, as The Daily Mail reported.

Carney has said that his five-week election campaign will take the country in a positive direction ahead of the April 28 vote and in the face of Trump's comments.

“We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,” Carney said.

The outrage

“President Trump claims that Canada isn’t a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen,” he added.

The Liberal party, currently governing in Canada, seemed posed for a historic election defeat until Trump's trade war kicked off.

He has consistently advocated for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States and has acknowledged that he has disrupted Canadian politics.

Canadians have been incensed by Trump's nearly daily assaults on Canada's sovereignty, which have resulted in a surge in Canadian nationalism that has bolstered Liberal poll numbers.

“They want our resources. They want our water. They want our land. They want our country. Never,” Carney said at a rally in Newfoundland.

The election

There are 343 seats or districts in the House of Commons up for grabs, and the election campaigns will last 37 days.

While there are multiple parties running, much like in the United States, the Liberals and the Conservatives are the only two that have a fighting chance at winning.

The party with the majority in Parliament will form the next government and its leader will be the prime minister.

Carney took the place of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January, and remained in place until the new leadership could find a replacement.

Carney's Plan for Canada

For his part, the current prime minister is fed up with what is happening with his neighbors to the south, namely, President Donald Trump and how he's running government.

The current party leader said the choice for Canadians would be to create a “Canadian Trump or a government that unites.”

“Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves,” Carney said in a hockey reference. “In this trade war, just like in hockey, we will win.”

The president made headlines when he put 25% tariffs on Canada’s steel and aluminum imports. He is also threatening sweeping tariffs on all Canadian products, along with all of America’s trading partners, to take place in early April.
