Actor Carl Weathers' official cause of death was revealed on Friday.

The Blast reports that Weathers died from "atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease."

The outlet adds, "Specifically, the document says he suffered from heart disease for years. Investigators declared the manner of death as 'natural.'"

The Mayo Clinic explains:

Atherosclerosis is the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls. This buildup is called plaque. The plaque can cause arteries to narrow, blocking blood flow. The plaque can also burst, leading to a blood clot. Although atherosclerosis is often considered a heart problem, it can affect arteries anywhere in the body.

More details

The Blast also reports other details that are included on Weathers' death certificate, including the time of death.

"According to his death certificate exclusively obtained by The Blast, Weathers passed away inside of his home in Venice, California. The legendary actor, who played Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, died on February 2 at 12:18 am," the outlet reports.

It adds, "The document lists the actor as spending 51 years in the 'entertainment industry' and divorced at the time of his passing. His son, Matthew Weathers, was listed as the person who notified authorities of his passing."

Finally, the outlet reports that Weathers "was cremated, and his family is taking home his ashes."

Whether the family plans to spread the ashes somewhere or whether it plans to keep them has not been reported.

"An exceptional human being"

It was at the beginning of the month that Weathers' family announced his passing.

In a statement, the family wrote:

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.

Weathers had a football background, but he is best known for his numerous and memorable film appearances, including in the Rocky films, Predator, Happy Gilmore, Action Jackson, Little Nicky, and many others.

His final appearance is being made posthumously. Before his passing, Weathers made a cameo appearance in a advertisement that will be broadcast during the National Football League's Superbowl.

Fox News reports that, following Weathers' passing, a last-minute change was made to the ad, because the ad, in its original form, was deemed no longer appropriate in light of Weathers' passing.
