Carl Weathers, the actor known for his performances in Rocky, Predator, and many others, has died at the age of 76. 

Weathers' death, according to Fox News, was announced by his family.

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024," the family wrote.

It added, "Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend."

Remembering Weathers

Most know Weathers for his acting, but, initially, he pursued a career in professional football. After playing college football at San Diego State University, the NFL's Oakland Raiders signed Weathers, and he played there for two seasons before being released.

Then, it was on to acting. Weathers played memorable characters in numerous films.

Many, for example, will know Weathers for having played the character of Apollo Creed in the first four movies of the Rocky series, alongside Sylvester Stallone. Others will remember Weathers for starring alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Predator film. And, still others will recall Weathers starring alongside Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore. 

Weathers, though, has many more acting credits to his name, including a credit for The Mandalorian, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination. Other credits include for roles in Action Jackson, Hurricane Smith, Little Nicky, Street Justice, Heat of the Night, and many others.

Weathers is so well-known that he has even played caricatures of himself, perhaps mostly notably in Arrested Development. 

"We lost a legend"

Many of Weathers' fellow actors have taken to social media to pay tribute to him, including Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Carl Weathers will always be a legend. An extraordinary athlete, a fantastic actor, and a great person. We couldn’t have made Predator without him. And we certainly wouldn’t have had such a wonderful time making it," Schwarzenegger said.

Sylvester Stallone has also posted a tribute to Weathers.

"We lost a legend yesterday. Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success ... I give him incredible credit and kudos. When he walked into that room and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness. ... I never could have accomplished what we did with Rocky without him.’" Stallone said.

Weathers is survived by two sons.
